Tawan Golden Sand Scenic Zone

Centered on the golden sand beach in the island’s southeast, this zone strings together a chain of attractions including Dinghai City, White Sparrow Temple, Tawan Mirror Lake and Dragon Pool Water Curtain.

Divine Pearl of the East China Sea

Resting on Dragon Pearl Beach within Tawan Scenic Area, an 80-centimeter spherical stone has been polished smooth by centuries of tidal erosion, named the Divine Pearl of the East China Sea. The stone rolls and rumbles within a rocky dragon’s throat, echoing thunderous roars to form the magical spectacle "Golden Dragon Spitting Pearl", hailed as an unparalleled wonder of China and one of Taohua Island’s Twelve Great Vistas.

Tawan Golden Sand Scenic Zone: Azure Seas and Golden Sands Stirring Romantic Sentiments

Qianbu Golden Sand Beach in the island’s southeast stretches 1,370 meters long and 500 meters wide, ranking as the second-largest beach in the Zhoushan Archipelago. The shoreline slopes gently with pure, fine soft sand, ideal for sea bathing, sand baths, sunbathing and coastal strolls. Two headlands stretch into the ocean, enclosing the bay into a placid lake with crystal clear sapphire water for most of the year. The bay teems with wild spotted grouper, goby, sea crucian, flounder and swimming crab, suitable for all kinds of water sports, angling and fishing. In summer and autumn, as stars fade and the sun rises above the waves, sea, sky and golden sand merge into one breathtaking celestial scene: Golden Sand Sunrise.

White Sparrow Temple

Renowned across the nation as the place where Guanyin Bodhisattva became a nun and cultivated herself, the temple hosts unique recitations of the Guanyin Scripture and stands as one of Taohua Island’s core cultural landmarks, recording Guanyin’s mortal spiritual journey. It also bears witness to centuries of non-governmental friendship between China and Japan. The historic "Chunri Maru" incident unfolded here over 240 years ago, laying the foundation for the sister-city partnership between Zhoushan and Kesennuma, Japan.

Qianbu Golden Sand Beach

Stretching 1,370 meters long and over 400 meters wide, it ranks second in size among all Zhoushan beaches. Its ultra-fine, pure soft sand surpasses Putuo Mountain’s Baibu and Qianbu Beaches as well as Shengsi’s Jihu Beach in smoothness, softer even than Zhujiajian’s East and South Sand Beaches. Unique sparse vegetation lines the upper shore — a rare feature unseen on other local beaches.

Tawan Mirror Lake

Spanning 3 square kilometers, the lake remains calm with translucent blue water for most of the year and a smooth seabed ideal for all water activities. The bay abounds in coastal fish suited for angling, netting and cage fishing. The Antique Fishery of Tawan Bay project invites visitors to wade into the waters to sightsee and experience traditional fishing work such as angling, trawling, cage trapping, hand-lining and beach netting, recreating the daily life of ancient fishermen.

Xuanbolugu Isle Scenic Zone: Eroded Magical Reefs and Lush Verdure

Located northeast of Taohua Island, Xuanbolugu Isle covers merely 0.78 square kilometers with its highest peak standing 139.6 meters above sea level. The islet is blanketed with dense woods, reeds and wild grasses, and rich in shellfish resources. It boasts diverse coastal landscapes including tidal flats, cliffs, rock outcrops, grottoes and reefs, perfect for coastal sightseeing, shell foraging, angling, camping and hiking. Key spots include Dragon Tooth Piercing Heaven, Reed Flat Gravel Beach, Thousand-Layer Rock, Turtle Cave and Seal Reef.

Dinghai City

Built on the rear beach of Bolugu Gate, it served as a major filming location for the movie The Opium War. The Battle of Dinghai, the dramatic climax of the film, depicts the unyielding spirit of the Chinese people through tragic, intense combat scenes. The full city wall measures 230 meters long, 12 meters wide and 12 meters at its highest point, equipped with a city tower, ancient artillery emplacements, arrow crenellations and flagpoles. Featuring upturned flying eaves, black tiles and red walls, the entire wall exudes classic, magnificent antique charm.

Anqi Peak Scenic Zone: Soaring Fantastic Peaks and Picturesque Vistas

This zone is defined by striking peaks and grotesque rocks, centered on ancient temples and natural grottoes.
  • Peak: Anqi Peak, standing 540 meters above sea level, the highest summit among all one thousand Zhoushan islands.
  • Rocks: A vast formation of weird crags across the mountain forms the grand spectacle "Hundred Cliffs Paying Homage", all rolling toward the Guanyin Stone that symbolizes salvation for all living beings.
  • Temple: Sacred Rock Temple, perched in a mountain hollow at 460 meters altitude — the highest temple in the Zhoushan Archipelago.
  • Grotto: Anqi Alchemy Cave, a natural cavern at 482 meters elevation, the retreat of the pre-Qin Taoist hermit An Qisheng for spiritual cultivation and elixir refining.
These peaks, rock formations, temples and caves are one-of-a-kind across Zhoushan. The zone features clear streams, winding brooks, whimsical stone shapes, extraordinary summits, serene surroundings and fresh air, forming an essential passage along the Peach Blossom Dragon Maiden tourist route.

Anqi Alchemy Cave

Perched 482 meters above sea level, legend holds that An Qisheng hid in this natural grotto to escape the tyranny of the Qin Dynasty, cultivating immortality and refining elixirs, later revered as a sage by posterity. Emperors of the Qin Dynasty and subsequent dynasties dispatched imperial envoys to search for him; some claimed to have met the white-haired sage dubbed the "Thousand-Year-Old Elder", while others witnessed him eating giant immortal jujubes yet refused all invitations to return to the mortal world. In 1327, Yuan Dynasty literary scholar Wu Lai visited Taohua Mountain to seek traces of An Qisheng and explore the alchemy cave ruins, leaving behind the verse: "Only empty alchemy cauldrons remain, known still to mountain woodcutters."

Sacred Rock Temple

First constructed in the 4th year of the Tongzhi reign of the Qing Dynasty (1865). Another Sacred Rock Temple stands opposite the mountain, built inside a natural cavern at 482 meters elevation with a history spanning over 400 years. Originally housed within Anqi Alchemy Cave, where An Qisheng practiced Taoism and refined elixirs, it still retains a stone Buddha shrine carved in the 27th year of the Guangxu reign (1894). Separated from the cave and rebuilt as an independent temple in 1986, it is elaborately terraced along the mountain slope across three tiers: Anqi Bridge, Release Pond and the main temple hall enshrining Shakyamuni Buddha. As the highest-altitude temple in all Zhoushan’s thousand islands, it earns the title "No.1 Temple of the Thousand Islands".

Hidden Fairyland

Hike roughly one hundred meters along the mountain path beside Sacred Rock Temple to find a towering giant boulder forming a natural stone grotto, 3 meters high and 4 meters wide with two interconnected entrances inscribed with the characters "Hidden Fairyland". Stepping inside, every footstep echoes; striking any stone within produces deep resonant booms. Stacked massive boulders create caves within caves and underground hollows, giving rise to its evocative name Hidden Fairyland.

Bell Pavilion

Ascend stone steps to the left of Hidden Fairyland to reach a hexagonal bell pavilion atop the mountain over 500 meters above sea level. Standing over six meters tall with intricately carved upturned eaves, it bears a horizontal plaque reading "Anqi Bell Echoes" on its front facade, flanked by a couplet:
Cloud mountains, cloud waters, cloud tides, cloud sea and sky;
Immortal peaks, immortal caves, immortal blessed realms.
A 2,500-kilogram bronze bell hangs inside; its slow resonant chime carries hundreds of li in all directions, creating the natural wonder of "Bell Echoes Across High Mountains".

Taohua Harbour Scenic Belt: Deep Waters, Gentle Tides and Dazzling Views

This semi-circular coastal scenic stretch runs over ten thousand meters long from Maoshan Wharf in the island’s southwest to Wushi Shizi in the southeast. Cruising its waters rivals a river cruise along the Li River. Unbroken captivating vistas unfold along the way, dominated by harbor waterways, island flora, sea-eroded caves and reefs, and coastal rock landscapes. Supplementary highlights include the island botanical garden, Millstone Peak, Water Pit Rock Cluster, Tang Monk and Disciples Crossing Sea Reef, Immortal Bridge, Black Gravel Beach and Underground Maze, forming a vivid, endlessly delightful coastal corridor.

Tawan Mirror Lake Recap

Spanning 3 square kilometers, the lake remains calm with translucent blue water for most of the year and a smooth seabed ideal for all water activities. The bay teems with coastal fish suited for angling, netting and cage fishing. The Antique Fishery of Tawan Bay project invites visitors to wade into the waters to sightsee and experience traditional fishing work such as angling, trawling, cage trapping, hand-lining and beach netting, recreating the daily life of ancient fishermen
