Putuo Island
Putuo Island is a sandy offshore island 2.09 square kilometers in area, located southwest of Leting County, Tangshan, Hebei Province. It ranks as the largest island in North China.
Distances to key locations: 2.6 kilometers southeast to Yuantuo Island, 4.3 kilometers northeast to Laoyujian Wharf, 39.3 kilometers to downtown Leting, 280 kilometers to Beijing, 220 kilometers to Tianjin, 75 kilometers to Tangshan and 85 kilometers to Qinhuangdao. Geographically, it sits amid the transportation ring linking Beijing, Tianjin, Tangshan and Qinhuangdao.
Designated a Hebei Ecotourism Demonstration Zone and International Birdwatching Base, Putuo Island boasts mild weather and picturesque scenery, forming a vital segment of the golden tourist belt along northern Bohai Bay. It is hailed as "a natural botanical and zoological garden isolated out at sea", shining like a brilliant pearl along the Bohai coastline.
Naturally formed by coastal sedimentation, the island bears eight distinctive identities: large island, sandy island, sea island, green island, bird island, wild island, sun-moon island and Buddhist sacred island. Lush vegetation blankets the land, with well-preserved primeval plant life covering over 98% of the island’s surface. Breakdown of vegetation coverage: herbaceous plants 80%, vines 0.5%, shrubs 8%, wild fruit trees 3.6%, wild economic forest 5.9%, and other flora 2%.
