Ten Thousand Buddha Garden
Also known as Yanshan Pagoda Cemetery, Ten Thousand Buddha Garden was jointly developed by Hong Kong Xuanwei Group and Zunhua Civil Affairs Bureau, with official approval from the Ministry of Civil Affairs and State Administration of Cultural Heritage.
Construction began in 1997, covering 448 mu with a total investment of 260 million RMB. It is China’s sole garden-style memorial cemetery enclosed within the feng shui wall of the Eastern Qing Tombs World Cultural Heritage Site, sharing the same auspicious geomantic vein as the imperial mausoleums. Positioned at the foot of the Yanshan Mountains and built as a mausoleum complex, it was originally named Yanshan Pagoda Cemetery. After numerous Buddha statues were erected within the grounds, it gained the widely recognized name Ten Thousand Buddha Garden.
Blending China’s 5,000 years of traditional culture with Buddhism, Taoism, Confucianism and modern landscape design, the garden serves as an integrated destination for cultural sightseeing, tourism and spiritual study. Initial construction of the Hong Kong-invested scenic zone launched in 1993, occupying 448 mu for Phase One works. A large antique sightseeing garden themed on Buddhist culture, it earned its moniker for the ten thousand uniquely shaped jade and golden Buddha statues enshrined throughout the grounds.
The scenic zone features more than ten distinctive landmark sites, foremost among them the Golden Pagoda, built at a cost exceeding 100 million RMB. Spanning over 10,000 square meters with 22 stories, the pagoda houses 9,999 golden Buddha statues cast from 2,600 taels of pure gold, and a sacred relic of the 6th Panchen Lama is enshrined at its spire.
