Huayang Cave (Baochan Mountain Scenic Area)
The Huayang Cave tourist zone is located 7.5 kilometers northeast of Hanshan County seat. During the Zhenguan reign of the Tang Dynasty, the eminent monk Huibao wandered here, enchanted by the landscape, and built a hut at the mountain’s foot — hence the mountain’s name Baochan Mountain.
Huayang Cave is the core attraction of the scenic zone, extending 1,600 meters deep. "Caves nest within caves, and an underground river winds through them; visitors row boats on the stream, with all grottoes interconnected." Countless fantastic natural rock formations unfold inside, each with distinctive grace and charm. The great Northern Song literatus Wang Anshi visited the cave drawn by its reputation, exploring its depths with torches and composing the timeless masterpiece Notes on a Trip to Baochan Mountain, a precious gem in Chinese literary history.
Baochan Mountain is ringed by dark green peaks. Below lie farmhouses wreathed in cooking smoke, while cowherds play flutes amid the countryside. The rustic mountain delights, pastoral tranquility, thrills of hidden cave exploration and exhilaration of mountain climbing bring endless joy to all visitors.
