Known colloquially as Old Hollow, Lejian Hollow sits two kilometres west of Nantang Lake. Enclosed by mountains on three sides and bordering water on the fourth, it boasts lofty peaks and dense woods steeped in intoxicating emerald greenery.
After 1978, archaeologists discovered thick layers of fossilised ancient organisms in this area. The sedimentary plant fossils include algae, simple single-leaf flora and compound-leaf varieties, scattered within easy reach. When rubbed and transferred onto paper, the clear vein structures of the plants form natural patterns reminiscent of freehand Chinese ink wash paintings.
