Gaizhou Watermelons are produced in Gaizhou City, Yingkou, Liaoning Province. The geographical indication protection scope covers 15 towns, townships and sub-districts including Taiyangsheng Sub-district and Bangshibao Town. The holder of the agricultural product geographical indication certificate is the Gaizhou Agricultural Technology Promotion Center.
Located on the Liaodong Peninsula in southern Liaoning, Gaizhou features a natural terrain pattern of "six mountains, one river and three parts farmland". It is endowed with abundant water resources, home to four major rivers — Daqing River, Biliu River, Xiongyue River and Shahe River — plus numerous tributaries. Annual rainfall ranges from 670 to 700 millimeters. Influenced by the ocean, the city enjoys warm, humid climate with ample sunshine: annual sunshine hours stand at 2,600–2,900, the average annual temperature is 9.4°C, and the frost-free period lasts 180 days. The fertile soil contains up to 3% organic matter.
Thanks to Gaizhou’s unique geography, mild climate, abundant water and fertile soil, its watermelons possess distinctive superior qualities. They ripen early, feature attractive appearance and high sugar content (sugar concentration at the center can hit 14%). The flesh is bright crimson, tender, crisp and juicy with rich nutrients. The crop delivers high yields of 5,000–6,500 kilograms per mu, boasts strong stress resistance and supports continuous annual cultivation.
