Luyuanping: A Secluded Unspoiled Ancient Village
Tucked away beside Enshi Grand Canyon lies Luyuanping, an ancient village inaccessible by motor roads. It features steep mountains, deep valleys and cascading waterfalls. Time stands still here, with well-preserved old residences and simple, honest villagers. Hikers call it a hidden paradise, while locals regard it as their beloved home.
The journey here is not easy. Visitors need to climb down 1,528 stone steps carved into the cliff, navigate 44 sharp bends, and walk another 3 kilometers. All travel within and out of the village relies entirely on foot.
Upon arrival, you will feel as if you have stepped into the Peach Blossom Land described by Tao Yuanming. Villagers still follow centuries-old farming traditions: growing tea, brewing homemade wine and cooking with firewood, leading a completely self-sufficient life.
Most buildings are traditional Tujia stilt houses. The main structures are built with wooden planks and surrounded by railings under tiled roofs. People live on the upper floors, while livestock and sundries are kept downstairs. These well-preserved dwellings are living fossils of traditional Tujia architecture.
Breathe in the fresh air scented with wild herbs, and embrace the serene natural beauty. Every effort to get here is well rewarded.
