Mao Zedong’s Former Residence
Located in Shangwuchang, Shaoshan Chong — an U-shaped farmhouse facing south, the birthplace of Mao Zedong.
Structure: Adobe and timber, 472.92 m² building area, 566.39 m² total area, 18 rooms.
Layout: 13 small blue-tiled rooms on the east (Mao’s family), 5 thatched rooms on the west (neighbor), shared central hall.
History: Purchased by Mao Zuren (great-grandfather) in 1878; later rebuilt into tiled rooms by Mao Shunsheng (father). Mao Zedong spent his formative years here.
Plaque: “Former Residence of Comrade Mao Zedong” inscribed by Deng Xiaoping in 1983.
Ticket: Free.
Transport:
Within Shaoshan: Ring road connects attractions. Buses and minibuses run daily 6:00–19:30 between the bus/train station, Mao’s Residence, and Dishuidong; ~10 min ride.
From Changsha: Daily trains Shao 1 (Changsha 7:05 → Shaoshan 9:35) and Shao 2 (Shaoshan 17:00 → Changsha 20:00).
