Situated on the north side of East Street in the old town of Shuocheng District, Shuozhou City, Chongfu Temple was founded in 665 (the 2nd year of the Lindé reign of the Tang Dynasty). During the Liao Dynasty, it served as the official residence of Grand Master Lin and was also called Linya Courtyard. It was renamed Linya Temple during the Tonghe reign of the Liao Dynasty. In 1150 (the 2nd year of the Tiande reign of the Jin Dynasty), it was granted the inscribed plaque Chongfu Chan Wei, and the buildings were magnificent and grand.
Preserved structures include the main gate, halls dedicated to the Goddess of Mercy, Amitabha Buddha, Ksitigarbha and Manjushri, as well as a scripture repository, bell tower and drum tower. The overall layout is rigorous with a clear hierarchy. Uniquely, the scripture repository stands in front of the main halls, a rare design among ancient temples. The Amitabha Hall is a large-scale well-preserved building of the Jin Dynasty, housing intact Jin-Dynasty statues and murals.
Note: There is another Chongfu Temple on the southern slope of Xiangfeng Peak in Beiling, on the outskirts of Fuzhou City, Fujian Province, about 8 kilometers from the urban area. Founded in 977 (the 2nd year of the Taipingxingguo reign of the Northern Song Dynasty) and originally named Chongfu Courtyard, it was a small complex and later fell into ruin.
