Located in northern Xizang and the northwestern part of Nagqu, Shuanghu literally translates to Two Lakes in Tibetan. Formerly the Shuanghu Administrative Office, this county-level special district was founded in 1976 to develop the northern Xizang No-Man’s-Land. It covers a vast territory with extremely scattered residential areas and falls under the jurisdiction of Nyima County.
The district lies in the lake basin of the Qiangtang Plateau, featuring gentle mountain slopes and expansive grasslands. The terrain is higher in the north and lower in the south, mostly covered by arid and semi-desert pastures, with an average altitude of 4,800 meters. Major mountain ranges here include the Kunlun Mountains, Tanggula Mountains, Hoh Xil Mountains and Dongbule Mountains. The region abounds with lakes, among which Dogai Coring Qixiang Tso, Dorso Dong Tso, Dogai Coring Qiang Tso, Meiriqie Tso and Yagen Tso are well-known.
