"Tortoise City" Shape Pingyao Ancient City is called "Tortoise City" because of the shape of the entire city wall. There are six city gates, one in the north and south, and two in the east and west. The south gate stretches out like a tortoise's head, with two wells outside the gate, metaphorically as the tortoise's eyes; the north gate bends eastward, like a tortoise's tail swinging east; the four gates in the east and west bend towards the head, like tortoise's feet3.
