- In ancient times, visitors toured the Nine-Bend Stream by rowing upstream from the First Bend to the Ninth Bend. Nowadays, tourists take bamboo rafts downstream from the Ninth Bend to the First Bend: departing from Xingcun Wharf and disembarking at Wuyi Palace. The whole journey stretches 9.5 kilometers and takes around 2 hours.
Brief Introduction to Tianyou Peak
Tianyou Peak stands to the north of the Sixth Bend Stream, at the heart of the scenic area. It borders Xianyou Rock to the east and Immortal Palm Peak to the west, rising sheer and towering above surrounding peaks. Right after rain or at dawn, vast white mist shrouds mountains and valleys. Driven by wind, the clouds surge and roll like pounding ocean waves. Standing atop the peak overlooking the ever-changing sea of clouds, visitors feel as if they have stepped into the immortal Penglai Paradise and wandered among heavenly palaces — hence the name Tianyou Peak, literally "Peak of Heavenly Wandering". It ranks as the top scenic spot of Wuyi Mountain.
Tianyou Peak is split into Upper Tianyou and Lower Tianyou. The section to the left of Panoramic Pavilion is Upper Tianyou; the rugged slopes along the Sesame Stream form Lower Tianyou.
Perched on the precipice atop towering cliffs, Panoramic Pavilion in Upper Tianyou offers an unparalleled viewing platform. Leaning on the railings, visitors gaze out over boundless cloud seas, floating peaks, winding Nine-Bend Stream and drifting bamboo rafts. All landscapes of Wuyi Mountain unfold before the eyes, broadening the mind and making visitors reluctant to leave. The ancient traveler Xu Xiake commented: "Though it does not border the stream, this peak commands the full beauty of the Nine Bends; it truly deserves the first place."
At the southern end of Lower Tianyou lies Tianyou Taoist Temple, renovated in recent years. Equipped with a convenience store and tea house, it delivers convenient services for tourists. Its palace-style multi-story building, named "Wandering Amid the Firmament", serves as a venue for guests to sip tea and admire the scenery.
A rare ormosia tree grows on Wonderful High Platform behind the temple. When its fruits ripen, mountain breezes shake the pods open, scattering bright red, glossy seeds across the ground.
Sesame Stream winds down from the southern mountain slope and cascades west of Wonderful High Platform to form the renowned Snowflake Spring Waterfall, with a drop of over 170 meters, flowing gracefully. More than 30 cliff stone carvings from successive dynasties adorn the rock faces beside the stream, a dazzling array of cultural relics. An ancient poem writes:
The flying waterfall roars down; even on sunny days one suspects rain,
Under dense ancient trees, summer brings a refreshing chill.
Behind Wonderful High Platform stretches an eastward mountain ridge called Clothes-Shaking Ridge, the summit of Xianyou Rock. Remains of the Immortal Wanderer Lodge, Three Friends Hall and Forest Sky Pavilion can still be found here.
Opening Hours: 8:00–18:00
