Dongjiang Lake Tourist Area is situated at Zixing in Hunan Province, 17 miles (28 kilometers) from Chenzhou City. It combines mountains, lakes, dams and caves with canyons, islands, waterfalls and forests. The lake is the largest artificial lake in Hunan with an average depth of 167 feet (51 meters) and an area of 62 square miles (160 square kilometers). The main scenic spots include:

Misty Small Dongjiang River
Misty Small Dongjiang River is the first attraction encountered after entering the Dongjiang Lake Tourist Area. It is 7.5 miles (12 kilometers) long and the water is so pure that you can drink it directly. Every May to October, at dawn and dusk, the entire river is misty and seems like a wonderland. The best time to see the fog is from 06:30 to 08:30 and from 17:30 to 19:30.

Dongjiang Dam
Walking along Misty Small Dongjiang River, you will see Dongjiang Dam which is 965 feet (294 meters) high. It stands in the valley like an arch barrier with two spillways leaning on the mountain. During periods of discharge, the water rushes down the spillways and turns instantly into mist. The mist permeates the entire valley and you can still feel it even if you are miles away.

Hougushan Waterfall
Hougushan Waterfall is to the southwest of Dongjiang Dam. It consists of two waterfalls facing each other about 100 yards (91 meters) apart. The western falls is over 66 feet (20 meters) high and the southern one is more than 656 feet (200 meters) high. The two grand falls add radiance and beauty to each other.

Longjing Canyon
Longjing Canyon, located to the south of Dongjiang Dam, is 1.6 miles (2.5 kilometers) long. Eighteen waterfalls and twenty-six pools are hidden in dense forests or among rugged rock in the canyons. Shanji Mountain, 0.7 mile (1 kilometer) to the east of the canyon, has groups of granite stones of different sizes and various shapes. Some well-known poems and sentences are carved on these stones.

Doushuai Cave
Doushuai Island, the biggest island of Dongjiang Lake, is famous for Doushuai Cave. Doushuai Cave, over 2.7 million years old, is 3 miles (5 kilometers) long and 130 feet (40 meters) high. It is warm in winter and cool in summer. There are twisting passage ways and stalactites hang upside down inside. Stalagnates stand in the cave; one is 118 feet (36 meters) high-the highest in the world.

Huangcao Town
Huangcao Town is located on Jinniu Island which is at the southernmost point of the lake. Some residences sit “over the water” and you can experience the customs of the locals here. Dongjiang Driftage, situated at Huangcao Town, is 16 miles (26 kilometers) long. From the beginning to the end, there are 108 rapids and the river has a drop of 246 feet (75 meters). Well-protected forests and odd shape rocks can be seen on both banks while drifting downstream.

Apart from these main scenic spots, there are the Strange Stone Museum, the Photography Museum and the Hunan Culture Museum. The Strange Stone Museum mainly collects unusual stones from Hunan, but also has many rare stones from home and abroad. The Photography Museum has lots of photos from photographers worldwide. You can learn more about the culture and history of Hunan through the sculptures, paintings, writings and embroideries at the Hunan Culture Museum.
