In the Rear Yuan’ensi Hutong of the South Jiaodaokou Street in Dongcheng District lies the former residence of Mao Dun where he had lived from 1974 until the beginning of 1981 when he passed away. Mao Dun was a 20th-century Chinese novelist and cultural critic. He is one of the most celebrated left-wing realist novelists of modern China. Standing in the front courtyard is the half-length statue of Mao Dun, and the rooms lining around the statue are the evidence of Mao Dun’s personal life. The layout of the back courtyard, including the placement of the furniture and accessories as well as the surroundings, all kept their original forms. The hall exhibits 400-plus items related to Mao Dun, including certificate of appointment, representative certificate, manuscripts, notebooks, fountain pens, tape recorders, seals, etc.
