Standing at the center of Beijing, Tian'anmen Square is well-known for its aesthetic values and political status. It can accommodate a grand rally of one million people. The square contains the Monument to the People’s Heroes and the Mausoleum of Mao Zedong. With the Great Hall of the People on the west, the National Museum of China and the National Museum of Chinese History on the east, as well as Zhengyangmen and the archery tower - two ancient buildings built in the 14th century - on the south, the square is magnificent with its grand symmetrical style. On both sides of Tian'anmen Square, there are Working People’s Cultural Palace and Zhongshan Park.
Built in 1417, Tian'anmen Square was originally named Chengtianmen and was renamed Tianan'men in 1651. The yellow glaze-tiled double-eave palace functioned as a rostrum for proclaiming pronouncements to assembled masses. On October 1, 1949, Chairman Mao Zedong proclaimed the founding of the new China here. The tower has five doors and at its front are seven bridges spanning a stream. Historically, only the emperor could use the central door and bridge. The gate leads to an imperial city -- the Forbidden City and is also the place where the Central Axis of Beijing crosses through. Flag-raising Ceremony Flag raising and lowering ceremonies at the square in the morning and at sunset are so sacred and exciting moments, attracting numerous tourists watching the five-star red flag flying in the sky. Flag-raising ceremony is a must-do for your trip in Beijing. The timetable of the ceremony changes depending on the sun’s orientation or cloudy, rainy or snowy days.
