Mr. Cai Yuanpei’s former residence in Beijing is a courtyard with three entrances from east to west in Dongtangzi Hutong, Dongcheng District, with a construction area of about 368 square meters. From 1917 to 1920, Mr. Cai lived here. As an academic leader, he lived a very frugal life. He did not own any property in Beijing, which means he just rented here. At that time, Mr. Cai was the principal of Peking University. In fact, Mr. Cai had rented in Xicheng and Xuanwu in Beijing at that time. The reason why Dongcheng District was finally designated as "Cai Yuanpei's Former Residence" was mainly because the "May 4th Movement" was used here.
At the entrance of Cai Yuanpei's former residence, a plaque with the words Dongcheng District Patriotic Education Base and a stone monument of "The Former Residence of Cai Yuanpei, a Cultural Relics Protection Unit in Beijing" is hung.
There is only one tour route, which is to enter along the promenade on the right. After the tour, you need to return to the original road. Walking through the corridor is the exhibition of Cai Yuanpei's former residence. The exhibition of Mr. Cai's life is in the large room at the end of the corridor. The walls are full of pictures and text introductions, detailing Mr. Cai's life and deeds, and showing many precious photos of Mr. Cai. There are many works of Mr. Cai and related works to commemorate him in the exhibition table.
When you leave the big house and go inside, Mr. Cai's study and bedroom are now. Both cottages are locked, but the furnishings in the house can be clearly seen through the windows. The bookshelves and chairs in the study, the paper and pen on the desk, inkstones, typewriters, the bed in the bedroom, the wardrobe with mirror, the rattan chair, the coats on the hangers, and the white towels on the towel rack restore the original details of Mr. Cai's living at the time. . Outside the bedroom door is the end of the tour route. There is a white bust head sculpture of Mr. Cai. A pot of chrysanthemums is placed in front of the sculpture surrounded by green plants. After the sculpture, there is a couplet "Academic Master, Model of the World".
