Built in the 1st Yongjia year of Western Jin Dynasty, the over 1700-year-old Tanzhe Temple is the oldest one in Beijing, and even older than Beijing as a city. Two towering ancient gingko trees stand in front of Pilu Pavilion of Tanzhe Temple. Planted during the Tang Dynasty more than 1300 years ago, the one on the east side is as high as 30 plus meters.
As a typical Buddhist temple, Tanzhe Temple stands on Tanzhe Hill in the western outskirts of Beijing. Covering an area of over 41,000 square meters, the temple consists of some pavilions, prayer halls, group of pagodas, courtyards and gardens dating from the Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties. The gardens contain various kinds of trees and flowers, but the magnolia flower is the most famous, some of which are of 300-year-old history.
