What Fun Attractions Are There on Taohua Island?

Taohua Island is a magical and picturesque islet in the East China Sea depicted in Louis Cha’s The Legend of the Condor Heroes and its sequel Return of the Condor Heroes. Endowed with abundant, diverse and high-grade tourism resources, it integrates seas, mountains, rocks, reefs, grottoes, temples, nunneries, flowers, forests, birdlife, military relics, historical memorial sites, cliff stone carvings and mythical legends. Boasting a perfect blend of natural and cultural landscapes, it was designated a Provincial-Level Scenic Area in 1993.

Taohua Island features Anqi Peak, the highest summit across the entire Zhoushan Archipelago; Taohua Harbour, the deepest port in Zhoushan; and the Giant Buddha Rock, the largest monolith along the southeast China coast. It also earns the laudatory title of "Island Botanical Garden". The organic integration of rich natural vistas, cultural relics and folklore myths forms six scenic zones on Taohua Island, which constitute three themed tourist routes focusing on martial arts, Buddhism and Taoism culture respectively.

The Condor Heroes Movie City, China’s sole island-based film and television base, nestles at the foot of Sanhua Peak — the stunning scenic spot described in Louis Cha’s novels. Covering an area of 2.5 square kilometers, it was invested and constructed by Ningbo East China Materials City Construction & Development Co., Ltd. All architectures adopt exquisite Song Dynasty styling, artfully harmonizing natural mountains, crags, grottoes, water bodies and woodlands. Visitors are effortlessly immersed in a classic martial arts world and get a taste of the vivid, colorful life of martial arts heroes.

Major sites within the movie city include Huang Yaoshi’s Manor, Niujia Village, Eastern Heretic Wharf, Guiyun Manor, Bagua Study, Huang Rong’s Chamber, Lady Feng’s Tomb, Lin’an Street, Imperial City Square, Southern Emperor Temple, Pure Sound Cave, Giant Buddha Rock and Listening Rain Lodge.

In the golden autumn of 2001, the mainland TV adaptation of The Legend of the Condor Heroes kicked off shooting here. After touring the scenic city, Louis Cha gladly inscribed its official name "The Condor Heroes Tourism City". In November 2002, the mainland version of Demi-Gods and Semi-Devils was also filmed on location here. Today, the movie city stands as a renowned tourist attraction integrating film shooting, sightseeing, leisure and entertainment.

The core landmark of this zone, Giant Buddha Rock, is the symbol of Taohua Island and the main haunt of Huang Yaoshi, lord of Taohua Island in Louis Cha’s The Legend of the Condor Heroes. Nestled midway up the rock face, Pure Sound Cave was the first dwelling of the pre-Qin Taoist sage An Qisheng after he drifted to the island. Louis Cha elaborately depicted this grotto in his novel as the secret vault where Huang Yaoshi hid the Nine Yin Manual and imprisoned the Old Urchin Zhou Botong.

Lush green trees, gurgling brooks and winding secluded paths fill the scenic zone. Standing atop Giant Buddha Rock, visitors overlook the Zhoushan Archipelago resembling a miniature waterside garden, a sight brimming with poetic charm. As the birthplace of Taohua Island’s martial arts culture, this zone serves as the starting point of the martial arts cultural tourist route.

The iconic symbol of Taohua Island, the rock appears equally massive whether viewed from afar or up close, shining strikingly under sunlight. It has a base circumference of 268 meters, a height of 72 meters, covers a ground area of 6,239 square meters and stands at an altitude of 287 meters, with a flat top spanning over one hundred square meters. Climbing it is a delightful experience. Though not overly steep, visitors must grasp vines and tree trunks, squeeze through crevices and traverse caves, evoking the poetic sensation of "When one doubts no path exists beyond stacked mountains, a village suddenly unfolds behind blooming willows".

Carved with the three characters "Pure Sound Cave" above its entrance, this natural grotto sits halfway up Giant Buddha Rock. A stone fissure roughly 10 centimeters wide and over 20 meters long pierces straight through to the rock’s summit, letting sunlight stream in to form a genuine "Thread of Sky". The cave runs all the way down to the rock base, and voices spoken at either end travel clearly through the stone, hence its name Pure Sound Cave. Louis Cha featured it prominently in his novel as the hideout for the Nine Yin Manual and the prison of the Old Urchin.

Located on Taohua Island’s eastern coast, this zone boasts the most pristine natural ecology on the islet, lined with vividly shaped bizarre rock cliffs. The mountaintop delivers panoramic sea views and unbeatable sunrise vistas. Key attractions include Taohua Stockade, Divine Pearl of the East China Sea, Flicking Finger Peak, Divine Eagle Rock, Sea Turtle Patrolling Shore and Shy Guanyin.

Sited at the heart of Taohua Valley and covering around 2 square kilometers, it is shaded by dense foliage and crisscrossed by clear streams and winding stone bridges, offering a tranquil perfect leisure retreat. Apricot battle flags, red lanterns and heroic ballads transport visitors straight into a martial arts realm. Manors including the Herbalist’s Retreat, Brother Jing’s Lodge and Rong’er Tea House allow guests to fully grasp the essence of affection, fate and righteousness woven throughout Louis Cha’s works.

Shaped like a thumb flicked out of a palm or a sword planted upside down beside the sea, this solitary peak rises from a landform sculpted as if by ghosts’ chisels, featuring sheer precipices and constant cool breezes. An inscribed stone tablet before the peak records that Wu Lai, a literary scholar of the Yuan Dynasty over 600 years ago, came here and wrote odes praising the surrounding fantastic rock formations.
