This wonton stall sits right at the entrance of West Street and is highly recommended by countless online visitors. It features a unique soup base, with ultra-thin wrappers wrapped around tiny fillings. Long queues form during meal hours!
Yixiantian Restaurant
Located near Songzi Bridge, this wonton shop serves hearty wild vegetable wontons that taste far better than mini wontons.
Qian’s Tofu Pudding
Just a short walk from Lu’s Mini Wonton Stall at the West Street entrance. First-time tourists often keep ordering bowl after bowl of this delicious treat, priced at around 3 RMB per bowl.
Traditional Tofu Pudding Shop
Tucked between Laifeng Bridge and Yongning Bridge along Misty Rain Corridor, this tiny shop specializes in homemade tofu pudding and mung bean noodles. The tangy, rich flavour is one-of-a-kind. Their ancestral tofu pudding costs roughly 2 RMB a bowl.
Steamed Pork Wrapped in Lotus Leaves
A Ming’s Lotus Leaf Steamed Pork and Braised Pork Knuckle are time-honoured signature dishes of ancient Xitang Water Town with a long history. They boast three standout qualities: pure alluring aroma, tender texture that holds its shape, and rich meatiness without greasiness. The shop stands at the foot of Yongning Bridge.
Three-Flavour Stinky Tofu
Found near Songzi Bridge, this stinky tofu has an exceptional flavour — crispy outside and silky tender inside. Other offerings including beef thick soup and fermented rice balls all cost 5 RMB per serving.
Granny Guan’s Stinky Tofu delivers incredibly smooth tender texture, located beside Huanxiu Bridge on West Street.
For sweet fermented rice: Walk roughly 30 metres past Huanxiu Bridge along Misty Rain Corridor to a shop marked Ancestral Sweet Fermented Rice. Small cups cost 2 RMB and large ones 3 RMB. Chilled fermented rice is sweet, smooth and perfectly balanced with mild rice wine aroma, utterly unforgettable.
Dried Mustard Pancakes
The shop lies beneath Songzi-Laifeng Bridge. Made with lard and preserved mustard greens, the pancakes are intensely fragrant and full of flavour at an affordable price. Squid balls sold here are another must-try for all visitors to Xitang.
Xitang Zongzi
Mini-sized zongzi small enough to finish in one bite, available in dozens of varieties: plain glutinous rice, red bean, pork, red date, red bean paste, preserved vegetable pork, chestnut pork and more.
A-Long One-Bite Zongzi on the old street is highly recommended. It offers a wide range of flavours: non-greasy pork zongzi and sweet fragrant dessert zongzi. Shop location: opposite Granny Guan’s stall on West Street.
Euryale Ferox Cake: Two reliable shops with great value are Forest near Anjing Bridge and Dragon & Phoenix along Misty Rain Corridor. Only 8 RMB per jin, and warm shopkeepers hand out free cake samples for tasting.
Malt Flat Cakes (Start-of-Summer Cakes)
Also known as Start-of-Summer Flat Cakes, they are a seasonal snack rooted in Xitang’s thousand-year-old folk traditions. Handcrafted via ancient techniques from glutinous rice flour, black sesame, red beans, walnut kernels, white sugar, plus medicinal herbs — mugwort and malt sprouts. Soft and non-sticky, they are said to aid digestion, reduce lipid levels and boost longevity. Ding’s Malt Flat Cakes are the most famous brand.
