Recommended Tour Route for Mount Tai
The Red Gate Route has been the primary climbing path since ancient times, serving as the imperial trail for emperors across dynasties.
The path is lined with shady trees, winding stone steps meander amid jagged peaks, and clear mountain streams flow along the way. The classic ancient route runs from Dai Temple via the Red Gate up to the Summit of Mount Tai. Starting at Yaocan Pavilion and ending at the mountain top, it perfectly blends cultural relics with natural landscapes. This quiet scenic zone represents the very essence of Mount Tai. Altogether more than 7,000 stone steps lead straight to the summit.
The section from Mid Heaven Gate to the peak is the cream of the whole scenic area. Its grand momentum, spectacular views and time-honored relics will bring you an indescribable spiritual shock.
If you are short on time, hike on foot to Mid Heaven Gate and then take the cable car directly to the top. You can reach the summit in merely seven minutes, just like "ascending to heaven in one step".
After thousands of years of construction and maintenance, this mountain trail is well-developed today. The stone stairways are solid and neat. Taoist temples and shrines are renovated regularly, inscriptions on steles remain distinct, ancient precious trees are well-labeled and protected, and brooks along the road are crystal clear.
Quaint teahouses and inns are tucked along the secluded lanes. When you feel tired from climbing, you can stop for a drink or a short rest. All weariness will fade away amid the tranquil charm.

It takes 3 to 5 hours to hike from the foot of the mountain to the summit.
Tips

A trip to Mount Tai cannot be regarded as complete without taking this route. It is highly recommended for first-time visitors.

You may start your journey from Dai Temple. The whole trail stretches 9.5 kilometers with over 7,000 stone steps and almost no flat ground. The full climb demands physical strength and perseverance. It will take 4 to 5 hours at a moderate pace to reach the peak, so please make adequate preparations in advance.

After arriving at Tai'an Railway Station, take Bus No.3 straight to the Red Gate climbing entrance.
Alternatively, take Bus No.3 or No.4 to the front gate of Dai Temple. After visiting the temple, walk 1.2 kilometers north from the back gate to reach the Red Gate hiking starting point.
