Best Travel Time for Lushan Mountain

You can enjoy stunning scenery on Lushan all year round, and summer stands out as the best season. It is the ideal time to escape the heat and admire the waterfalls.

Four Seasons on Lushan

Spring: Dreamlike Beauty

When blossoms fade in the mortal world in April, peach flowers bloom in mountain temples.
Late spring is perfect for visiting Flower Path. Blooming flowers line the winding secluded paths, and the lake and mountains form a picturesque scene.
This is also the rainy season. The torrential Three-Tiered Spring rushes down like an angry jade dragon, thundering from the sky and leaving visitors utterly amazed.
Recommended spots: Flower Path, Hanpo Pass, Three-Tiered Spring

Summer: Fresh and Dewy Scenery

The peaks around Xiufeng are exquisite and charming. An ancient saying goes: The beauty of Lushan lies in its southern slope, and the finest scenery of the southern slope is found at Xiufeng.
Kai Xian Waterfall, immortalized in Li Bai’s verse Its torrential waters plunge three thousand feet, As if the Silver River fell from heaven’s height, is located right here. It is an ideal summer retreat that no traveller should miss.
Recommended spots: Xiufeng, Poyang Lake

Autumn: Intoxicating Views

In Splendid Valley, countless rocky ridges compete in beauty and winding valleys stretch far and wide.
Natural cliffs and jagged stone forests take vivid shapes: roaring lions, tigers leaping across ravines, nimble monkeys climbing rocks, and immortals sitting cross-legged. Every formation comes alive and captivates tourists.
Great Heavenly Pool is world-famous for the perilous Dragon Head Cliff, mist around Lingxu Pavilion, and the Buddha Lights above Manjusri Platform.
Recommended spots: Splendid Valley, Great Heavenly Pool, Meilu Villa

Winter: Jade-like Snowscape

When covered in snow, Lushan looks like jade from one angle and emerald green from another. Every distant and nearby view holds unique charm, filled with poetic romance. No wonder Tao Yuanming chose to live a free and easy life here.
Five Elders Peak resembles white-haired elders sitting peacefully among mountains. In the dusk of snowy hills, you can almost catch the faint breath of coming spring. Sightseeing in snow and soaking in hot springs are top choices for winter trips.
Recommended spots: Five Elders Peak, Tianmu Hot Spring

When to Visit Lushan (Editor’s Note: Peak Season — Early May to August)

Each season has its own charm, yet summer remains the most popular time for summer getaways and waterfall viewing.
Tall green peaks, thunderous silver waterfalls, ever-changing sea of clouds, and elegant classical gardens fully display Lushan’s infinite charm.
Lushan is beloved by tourists home and abroad for its spring-like coolness in midsummer. It is a renowned scenic resort and summer sanctuary.
Lushan enjoys mild weather: cool summers and moderately warm winters.
Seasonal features: late spring, short summer, early autumn and long winter.
According to historical meteorological records, the highest temperature on the mountain is only 32°C, while the lowest can drop to -16.8°C, with an annual average temperature of roughly 11°C.
Seasonal average temperatures are moderate:
Spring: 11.5°C
Summer: 22.6°C
Autumn: 17.4°C
Winter: around 1°C.
Standing high above sea level and surrounded by rivers and lakes, Lushan easily forms clouds and rainfall when moist air currents are blocked by mountain ridges.
The mountain receives abundant rainfall, with an annual average precipitation of 1,917 millimetres and 168 rainy days per year.
There are 192 foggy days annually. The ever-shifting mist drifts across the peaks and adds magical beauty to the landscape.
All peaks of Lushan rise above 1,000 metres, with Hanyang Peak reaching 1,474 metres. Dense mountain forests, surrounding lakes and rivers, and high humidity create a sharp temperature gap between the mountain top and lowlands in summer.
In midsummer, temperatures in the Poyang Lake Basin can soar above 39°C under scorching sunshine. Meanwhile, the average temperature on the mountain stays at about 22.6°C, with 15~20°C in the morning and evening.
Stepping up from the sweltering lowlands to the cool mountain top feels like entering another world, just as Bai Juyi wrote: Upon arrival, I feel transported into a brand-new world.
