What fun places are there in Jiujiang?

Endowed with outstanding people and abundant natural treasures, Jiujiang boasts extremely rich tourism resources. Its convenient water and land transportation once boosted China’s economic and cultural development, earning it the reputation of “the hub connecting seven provinces at the confluence of three rivers” and making it a key strategic city. With a history of more than 2,000 years, Jiujiang once served as an important military stronghold as well as a centre for business and cultural exchange.

The classic movie Romance on Lushan Mountain has drawn countless tourists here. Against the shore of Poyang Lake, the young couple at the Poyang Viewing Pavilion are bathed in the morning sunrise. In addition, many pivotal historical events took place on Lushan. It was the venue for the preparatory meeting for the Nanchang Uprising of August 1, where CPC leaders planned the uprising. In the early stage of the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression, CPC delegates led by Zhou Enlai held two rounds of negotiations with the Kuomintang on the united front against Japan, which helped bring about the second KMT-CPC cooperation.

The scenic area consists of a cluster of karst caves (Dragon Palace Cave, Jade Pot Cave and Jade Immortal Cave), Xianzhen Rock Temple, a forest park and Lover’s Valley Rafting. Stretching 1,600 metres long, this unique karst cave was gradually shaped by nature during the Cambrian Period of the Palaeozoic Era into a magnificent underground art palace. The cave maintains a constant temperature of 18°C all year round. Visitors can enjoy small bridges over flowing water, hanging stalactites and towering stalagmites in various fantastic shapes. The whole landscape closely resembles the East China Sea Dragon Palace described in the classic novel Journey to the West.

Transportation At the long-distance bus station, there is a bus departing for Yangzi at 13:40, passing through Dragon Palace Cave (Tianhong Township). This direct route goes through Hukou County → Liusi → Dingshan → Taiping → Tianhong with no transfers needed.

Beside the vast Lushan West Sea and beneath the enchanting Yunju Mountain lies a blessed land where Zhu Yuanzhang once lived in seclusion before rising to power. Known as the “Amazon of the East” and the “Jiuzhaigou of South China”, it is a popular resort praised as “a happy home for ordinary people”.

The scenic strip is made up of two sections: the ecological Scissors Gorge and the cultural Woyunlong Valley. It starts from the Central Park on Guling Street and ends at Donglin Temple beside National Highway 105. The total length is nearly 10 kilometres with a vertical drop of 1,000 metres. The vegetation coverage exceeds 95%, with nearly 3,000 plant species. The air is fresh with an extremely high concentration of negative oxygen ions.

Suojiang Tower stands on the south bank of the Yangtze River, one kilometre northeast of downtown Jiujiang. The original architectural complex included the River Lock Tower (Suojiang Tower), Wenfeng Pagoda (Huilong Pagoda) and four iron ox statues. Only the pagoda survives today. Construction of Suojiang Tower began in the 13th year of the Wanli reign of the Ming Dynasty. It was initiated by Wu Xiu, the prefect of Jiujiang, and took 18 years to complete. The three-storey main building was named River Lock Tower, with four iron ox statues cast around it. The pagoda was called Wenfeng Pagoda, also known as Huilong Pagoda for its location on Huilong Jetty.

The tower takes its name from Xunyang, the ancient name of Jiujiang. Originally a folk tavern with a history of over 1,200 years, it was a favourite gathering place for literati. Famous poets including Bai Juyi, Wei Yingwu and Su Dongpo once climbed the tower and composed poems here. It rose to worldwide fame thanks to Shi Naian’s classic novel Water Margin. The story of Song Jiang writing rebellious poems while drunk on Xunyang Tower has been passed down through generations alongside the literary masterpiece.
