Enter the expressway at Nanbaixiang. Drive past Fenshuiguan, Fuding and Taimu Mountain, then continue toward Fu’an. Exit the highway at Zhangwan shortly before Ningde City (toll fee: 120 yuan).
Turn right after exiting and drive straight ahead until you see the road sign for Baishuiyang Scenic Area. Turn right again and travel about 10 kilometers to Badu Toll Station (toll: 6 yuan). This is the start of the 83-kilometer Grade II highway leading to Pingnan County.
The subsequent 83 kilometers consist entirely of winding mountain roads with light traffic. However, continuous mountain bends easily cause driver fatigue. Keep heading toward Pingnan County Town.
You will first spot the imposing county government building before entering the town. Two hundred meters further lies a large roundabout.
Turning right leads to the scenic spots: 22 kilometers to Baishuiyang and 30 kilometers to Yiyang Yuanyang Stream. Follow this road for 20 kilometers until you reach a fork. Turn right for the remaining 10 kilometers to Yuanyang Stream, or turn left for just 2 kilometers to Baishuiyang.
Going straight leads downtown, where supermarkets and hotels are concentrated.
A gas station is a few hundred meters to the left. A tire repair shop is located at the roundabout.
It is recommended to refuel at the Fu’an Service Area beforehand.
Accommodation
No room discounts are available on weekends. The only four-star hotel in town charges extremely high rates comparable to luxury hotels in Wenzhou and is not recommended.
Hotels inside the scenic area are also pricey: standard rooms cost 388 yuan. There are no evening leisure facilities nearby, making the stay dull, and dining is inconvenient — unless you bring your own tent.
A good choice is Jiajia Hotel in the town centre. It is clean and tidy with spacious beds that fit two guests comfortably.
Weekend rate for a standard room: 188 yuan
Weekday rate: 120 yuan
The most luxurious suite costs only 388 yuan.
Rooms are equipped with TV, hot water and free broadband Wi-Fi.
Dining
The town has plenty of restaurants at various price levels. Local specialties include rice-smoked rabbit and home-cooked dishes made with rural farm produce.
The charcoal-grilled grass carp at the night market food stalls is served on an extra-large platter, roughly the size of a boiled fish dish, with a whole fish cooked intact. One portion costs 55 yuan.
Numerous supermarkets make daily shopping very convenient.
Itinerary
Day 1
Gather and depart from Wenzhou at 7:00 a.m. You will arrive in Pingnan County Town around 11:00 a.m. Check into the hotel first, then have lunch.
Spend the afternoon visiting Yiyang Yuanyang Stream Scenic Area.
Ticket price: 60 yuan. The combined ticket for Yuanyang Stream plus Baishuiyang costs 135 yuan, while a single ticket for Baishuiyang is 95 yuan. Parking fee is 5 yuan.
The whole tour takes 3 to 4 hours and requires plenty of physical energy, so it is better scheduled on the first day.
Recommended hiking route:
Lingyun Plank Road → Lianxin Pavilion → Tiger Mouth Rock → Dragon Tour Pool → Dingtian Immortal Banquet Valley → Mini Hukou Waterfall → Thousand-Tiered Waterfall → Carefree Pavilion → Baizhang Waterfall → Water Curtain Cave → Exit.
Finish the hike around 5 p.m., then drive back to town for a shower, dinner and rest.
Day 2
Get up at 6:30 a.m. and have breakfast at 7:00 a.m., then drive to Baishuiyang Scenic Area.
Upon arrival, take an electric shuttle bus for 5 kilometers, then walk another 1 kilometer.
Swimmers should bring swimwear and flip-flops. Personal belongings can be stored at the viewing platform.
Lockers here are iron cabinets for 5 yuan each. Early arrival guarantees an available locker; once tour groups arrive at noon or afternoon, all lockers will be occupied.
Changing rooms are available at the viewing platform. Free socks are provided with entry tickets for wading. If you only plan to walk in shallow water, put your flip-flops inside the socks to avoid sharp stones hurting your feet. This is unnecessary if you intend to swim.
Spend roughly 3 hours enjoying the water until about 11 a.m., when tourist crowds start to build up. Head back to town for lunch and then drive home. You can arrive before dinner if the traffic is smooth.
Weather Reminder
Mountain weather is highly changeable. Rain in the town does not mean rain inside the scenic area.
Keep your schedule flexible. In the event of heavy rainfall, Baishuiyang may close for safety due to rising water levels.
