Recommended Hiking Itineraries for Taimu Mountain
Standard Route
Scenic Area Square (view Husband-and-Wife Peaks and Eighteen Arhats Paying Homage to the Mountain) → Guoxing Temple (Tang Dynasty temple ruins) → Sagong Ridge → Yingxiantai (concentration of figurative stone formations) → Blue Stream Gorge → Sky Crack (experience the Taimu Mountain fitness trail) → Yipianwa (rock cluster marking Goddess Taimu’s ascension) → Hongxue Cave (taste local Taimu mountain tea) → Sky-Piercing Cave (narrow fissure cave with overhanging boulders) → South Heavenly Gate (Young Monk Worshipping the Moon, Guanyin on a Lotus Throne) → Seven-Star Cave (fissure cave with seven huge rocks overhead) → Purple Smoke Ridge (view Nine Carps Ascending to Heaven, Two Buddhas Discussing Scriptures and Heartbroken Rock along the way; if mist rises, detour to Wind-Riding Bridge for the mist-shrouded Nine Carps) → White Cloud Temple (ancient Tang temple) → Wulonggang (precipitous peaks) → Longtan Lake (climb Mist-Watching Hill if fog rolls in) → Scenic Area Square.
Afterwards, if time permits, visit the Goddess Taimu Statue Garden and the Geopark Museum.

Extended Add-Ons (for visitors with ample time and good physical condition)
- After Yingxiantai, detour into Calabash Cave (thrilling exploration), then pass through General Cave to Dragon Beard Ridge to view Heavenly Pillar Peak, before continuing toward Sky Crack. Extra time: around 1 hour.
- After Yipianwa, head to the Hall of Five Hundred Arhats (the only white marble arhat sculpture group in China) and Xiangshan Temple (admire the reflection of Nine-Carp Peaks in Jiuli Lake). Proceed through South Heavenly Gate Cave to South Heavenly Gate. Extra time: around 1 hour.
- From White Cloud Temple, continue to Mani Palace (China’s oldest surviving Manichaean site), Fuding Peak (the mountain’s highest point), and Dragon Pearl Ridge (steep peaks with views of Dragon Gate Cave). Each spot adds roughly 30 minutes.
Shortened Route (for limited time or low stamina)
- Reach South Heavenly Gate, walk through Seven-Star Cave, Dripping Cave, Sanfu Waist Pass and Jade Monkey Gazing into the Mirror back to Cloud Marker Stone. Pass through Small Stone Gate and descend the mountain beside Calabash Restaurant. Glance back at the panoramic peaks from the viewing platform before going downhill.
Total duration: about 3 hours.
- Alternatively, go straight to the Hall of Five Hundred Arhats after Yipianwa and then hike down. Arrange the pick-up vehicle at Xiangshan Temple parking lot.
Total duration: about 2 hours.
Two-Day Itinerary (for overnight stays on the mountain, minimal backtracking)
Day 1: Peak-climbing Sightseeing Tour
Scenic Area Square → Guoxing Temple → Sagong Ridge → Yingxiantai → Cloud Marker Stone → Seven-Star Cave → Purple Smoke Ridge → Moxiao Summit → Fuding Peak → Dragon Pearl Ridge → Wulonggang → Longtan Lake → Scenic Area Square.
Day 2: Cave Exploration Tour
Scenic Area Square → Xuánji Cave → Viewing Platform → Calabash Cave → General Cave → Dragon Beard Ridge → Sky Crack → Yipianwa → Hongxue Cave → Sky-Piercing Cave → South Heavenly Gate Cave → Xiangshan Temple → Hall of Five Hundred Arhats → Xiangshan Temple Parking Lot (vehicle pick-up point).
Sunrise Viewing Tips
There are many viewpoints for sunrise over the East China Sea:
- Guests staying on the summit can go directly to Fuding Peak or Wulonggang.
- Guests lodging near the parking lot can head to Giant Boulder or Sea-Viewing Terrace
