Arjong Namtsong Monastery is situated in the core Danxia scenic area of Kanbula National Forest Park, 5 kilometers away from Namtsong Gully. It is a monastery of the Nyingma School of Tibetan Buddhism. Its Tibetan name is Samngak Tendrel Ling, and it has a history of more than 1,100 years — 600 years older than Kumbum Monastery.

To the north of the peak stands a rock mountain shaped like a Tibetan script character, soaring high into the clouds, hence the name Arjong Namtsong. As a sacred Buddhist site today, the monastery serves as a major gathering place for Nyingma believers from Jainca and Guide counties. Religious assemblies are held in the 3rd, 4th, 9th and 12th lunar months every year. The grand ritual on the 13th day of the 4th lunar month draws the largest crowds, featuring traditional cham dance and attracting numerous pilgrims and visitors.

The area is surrounded by grotesque towering peaks. The lofty and precipitous Namtsong Peak rises to the northeast of the monastery. On its northern side lies the only stone path leading to the summit, mostly chiseled out of sheer cliffs. The trail runs diagonally across the rock face, with some sections almost vertical and extremely perilous.

Cross a small stream northeast of the monastery and follow the stone path to the top, and you will find an ancient temple hidden among lush pines. Standing atop Namtsong Peak, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the magnificent landscapes of Kanbula.
