Accommodation Guide for Ngari, Xizang
First of all, the accommodation conditions in Ngari cannot compare with those in major cities across inland China, yet the region boasts breathtaking scenery.
Hotels & Guesthouses
Along the Northern Route, nearly every township has guest houses and inns, so sleeping outdoors is rarely necessary. However, the lodging facilities are generally very basic, and you need to be fully prepared. Standard guest rooms are almost unavailable in most areas. Only a few places along the entire Great Northern Route offer such rooms, mainly Shiquanhe, Zanda and Shigatse. In most locations, a single bed costs roughly 20 to 30 yuan per night.
Washing & Hygiene
Running water is hardly accessible. Staff usually provide boiled water and cold water for washing, yet the water quality is unstable and often contains visible impurities. Wet wipes and mineral water are essential items to bring. Basins provided by the inns are usually dirty, so you have to clean them thoroughly before use. It is recommended to bring two portable basins, which take up little space in the vehicle.
Bedding
The quilts and bed sheets are generally not very clean and seldom changed regularly, though they do not emit strong unpleasant odors. If you have a sleeping bag, make sure to use it.
Restrooms
Most restrooms are dozens of meters away from the guest rooms. Be sure to take a headlamp or flashlight when using them at night. Many travelers also relieve themselves outdoors after dark, a common practice among local residents. Please do not expect the restrooms to be clean. During the daytime, most people prefer using the open fields rather than the indoor facilities.
