What Are the Top Ten Special Local Products of Jiamusi?

1. Huachuan Rice

Each grain of Huachuan Rice is white and glossy as jade, plump and creamy, packed with abundant nutrients and grown in eco-friendly, pollution-free conditions. Cooked rice emits a rich, lingering fragrance with a soft, fluffy texture; congee simmered from it tastes sweet and smooth, leaving a pleasant aftertaste that lasts for days. It has earned a well-known praise: "When the wind blows, rice aroma intoxicates passers-by; long after the meal, the fragrance still lingers on the road."
Huachuan County sits in the heart of the Sanjiang Plain on the southern bank of the lower Songhua River in eastern Heilongjiang Province. It borders Fujin City to the east, Jiamusi City to the west, Jixian and Huanan Counties to the south, and Tangyuan, Luobei and Suibin Counties across the river to the north. It is reputed as a "blessed natural land and a land abundant in fish and rice".
Superior natural and geographical conditions endow Huachuan with unique developmental strengths, foremost among which is its robust rice industry foundation. Nestled in the Sanjiang Plain, the county boasts flat, fertile farmland. Of its total 2.1 million mu of cultivated land, 900,000 mu are paddy fields, with an additional over 800,000 mu of dry farmland suitable for conversion into paddies — the total potential paddy area can reach 1.2 million mu. Water resources are abundant: the Songhua River flows 97.5 kilometers through the county, and the underground water table averages 5 to 7 meters deep with massive groundwater reserves. Four large irrigation districts within the county, upon full upgrading, will deliver Songhua River water to irrigate 900,000 mu of paddies.
Huachuan has a long rice cultivation history supported by strong technical expertise, stable high yields and superior grain quality, with rice products sold across 22 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions nationwide. The county’s rice processing capacity is formidable, home to 127 rice processing enterprises with an annual processing output exceeding 1.5 million tons. It has become one of the largest production, processing and distribution hubs for rice in eastern Heilongjiang Province.

2. Huanan White Pumpkin

Huanan County has a long history of white pumpkin cultivation. Records in the Huanan County Chronicle note that pumpkins (white pumpkins) were planted on reclaimed land as early as the second year of the Xuantong reign of the Qing Dynasty (1910). In 1976, Fan Chun selectively bred a branchless white pumpkin in Kazihou Village (now Fuyu Village), Mengjiagang Township. On November 30, 1990, the variety was officially identified as "Branchless White Pumpkin" by the Science and Technology Commission of Heilongjiang Province.
At that time, Huanan ranked first in the province for white pumpkin planting acreage and successfully hosted six editions of the China Golden Pumpkin Festival. The county has been awarded the titles "China’s Hometown of Pumpkins" and "China’s Hometown of White Pumpkin Seeds". White pumpkin cultivation stands as one of Huanan County’s five pillar industries. The county Party committee and government attach great importance to the sector, rolling out supportive policies and ramping up brand development, promising a bright industrial future. Currently, the county operates 2 municipal-level leading white pumpkin enterprises, 6 professional planting cooperatives and 10 pumpkin seed purchasing, processing and trading companies.
After Huanan White Pumpkin obtained national geographical indication registration, its brand recognition and product added value rose markedly. White pumpkin seeds command an average price 1 RMB per jin higher than comparable products, directly raising farmers’ income by 120 RMB per mu.

Geographical Scope

Huanan County lies on the southern bank of the lower Songhua River in eastern Heilongjiang Province, between 129°55′–131°16′ east longitude and 45°51′–46°31′ north latitude. Shaped like a maple leaf, the county stretches 130 kilometers from east to west and 73 kilometers from north to south, covering a total area of 4,415.6 square kilometers. It administers 6 towns and 4 townships: Huanan Town, Tulongshan Town, Mengjiagang Town, Shitouhezi Town, Yanjia Town, Tuoyaozi Town, Lishu Township, Dabaliang Township, Jinsha Township and Mingyi Township, encompassing 192 administrative villages. The protected geographical area for Huanan White Pumpkin covers 228,000 hectares, including 20,000 hectares of pumpkin plantations yielding an annual output of 18,000 tons.

Product Quality Traits

  1. Botanical Traits: Huanan White Pumpkin belongs to the genus Cucurbita in the Cucurbitaceae family, featuring a robust root system with dense fibrous roots and vigorously growing vines. Local spring conditions — aridity, strong winds, rapid temperature rises and favorable soil moisture — create ideal sowing conditions. Summers are short with synchronized rainfall and heat, moderate precipitation, ample sunlight and accumulated temperature. Autumns bring large temperature swings between day and night with abundant sunshine, facilitating dry matter accumulation in pumpkins. Long, frigid winters with heavy snow inhibit pest overwintering. The county’s land was developed relatively late, yielding soil rich in trace elements including iron, zinc and selenium alongside high organic matter content, which promotes the accumulation of amino acids, protein and other beneficial compounds. This unique climate and natural resource endowment produces the distinctive quality of Huanan White Pumpkin and its seeds.
  2. External Sensory Features: Huanan White Pumpkin grows as main vines with no lateral branches. Fruits are oval and greyish-green, with pale yellow sweet, slightly floury flesh. The oval seeds boast a 60%–80% rate of large flat seeds (over 12.5 mm). The seeds are pure white, large and thin-shelled with thick, mellow kernels coated in a thin green film surrounding jade-white inner nutmeat, delivering a clean, fresh and rich flavor. Its flowers, stems and leaves are all edible.
  3. Internal Quality Indicators: Pumpkin flesh contains over 95 mg/kg vitamin C, more than 2.5% soluble solids and over 1.8% total sugar. Pumpkin seed kernels have total amino acids exceeding 34%, protein over 33% and crude fat above 35%; seeds contain more than 20% crude fiber and over 1100 mg/kg phosphorus.
  4. Safety Standards: Production strictly complies with green food specifications. Growing areas follow NY/T391 Green Food Producing Area Environmental Quality Standards, pesticides adhere to NY/T393-2000, and fertilizers follow NY/T394-2000, fully abiding by the Agricultural Product Quality Safety Law. A full agricultural product quality traceability system is being gradually established to guarantee complete traceability.
