Xianyang Shadow Puppetry
Shaanxi is known as the birthplace of Chinese shadow puppetry. Xianyang shadow puppets are traditional folk artworks carved, engraved, painted and crafted from cowhide and donkey hide. With a history of over 2,000 years, they feature bold exaggeration and rich decorative appeal. Accompanied by music, singing and vivid movements, they are performed as shadow plays, also called lantern shadow shows. Incorporating the strengths of various shadow puppet styles across the Guanzhong region, Xianyang shadow puppets boast large-sized figures, lively expressions, exquisite carving and rich colors.
Folk Straw Weaving
Since ancient times, local people in Xianyang have skillfully woven common materials such as willow twigs, branches, wheat straw and corn husks into a variety of beautiful and practical daily necessities and artworks. Folk paper-cutting is a much-loved traditional folk art, widely used to decorate doors, windows, walls and garments. Paper-cuts from the mountainous northern part of Xianyang feature a simple and unsophisticated style, while those from the southern plains have fluid and varied lines, each carrying distinct local characteristics.
The works of Ku Shulan, a master paper-cutter from Xunyi County, stand out for their bold, concise shapes and full layouts. They convey the sincere emotions of working people and their aspiration for a better life.
Wugong Sui Handwoven Cotton Cloth
Sui handwoven pure cotton cloth mainly falls into four categories: willow stripe, colored stripe, check and jacquard. By freely combining 22 basic colored threads, craftsmen can create thousands of fabrics in diverse colors and patterns. The cloth is widely used for bed linens, garments, curtains, wall hangings, tablecloths and cushions.
Binzhou Pear
Binzhou pears have clean peel, fine crisp flesh, abundant juice and sweet flavor. They are highly storable, remaining fresh in earthen cellars for up to half a year with unchanged quality and taste.
