Introduction to National Treasures from Maoling Mausoleum
Gilt Bronze Horse
This cultural relic was unearthed by local villagers while leveling the land in Douma Village, Xiwu Township, south of Princess Pingyang’s Tomb in May 1981. Standing 62 centimeters tall and 76 centimeters long, the fully gilt bronze horse stands upright on four legs with its head raised and tail tilted up, presenting a vigorous and sturdy posture. Its head is vividly sculpted, with a delicate nose, bright eyes and erect ears.
Historical records refer to it as a "golden horse". Crafted exquisitely, it takes the Ferghana horse from Dayuan of the Western Han Dynasty as its prototype. This national treasure is now preserved in Maoling Museum.
Gilt and Silver Bamboo-joint Incense Burner with Tall Support
Discovered alongside the Gilt Bronze Horse, this burner is 58 centimeters in total height, with a base diameter of 13.3 cm, a mouth diameter of 9 cm and a lid height of 6 cm.
A 35-character inscription is carved around the outer rim of the lid: "For the sleeping quarters of the Weiyang Palace. One gilded bamboo-joint incense burner, weighing ten jin and twelve liang in total. Made by the Inner Palace in the fourth year, delivered in the tenth month of the fifth year. No. 3."
Another 33-character inscription runs around the outer side of the circular foot: "For the sleeping quarters of the Weiyang Palace. One gilded bamboo-joint incense burner, weighing eleven jin in total. Made by the Imperial Workshop in the fourth year, delivered in the tenth month of the fifth year. No. 4."
Gold and Silver Inlaid Bronze Rhinoceros Zun (Ritual Vessel)
Weighing 13.3 kilograms, it measures 34.1 cm in height, 58.1 cm in length and 20.4 cm in width. It is an exquisitely wrought artwork. In 1963, Zhao Zhenxiu, a villager from Douma Village, Xiwu Township, Xingping County, discovered it in an earthen mound north of the village. This national treasure is now collected in the National Museum of China.
Jade Door Knocker Carved with Four Divine Beasts Pattern
Unearthed to the east of Maoling Mausoleum in 1975, this elaborate artwork is carved from Lantian jade. It is currently housed in Maoling Museum.
