Where to Stay in the Tengger Desert
In the core area of the Moon Lake Ecotourism Zone of the Tengger Desert, you will find quaint and exquisite small hotels and bars. The guest rooms meet the standards of a 4A-level scenic area. There are also yurts featuring strong Mongolian style and luxury villas. You can enjoy natural, comfortable and distinctive accommodation experiences. At night, lie on the desert ground to gaze at the stars, chat over beers, and take a hot shower for a sound sleep.
- Hot water is available in all these lodgings. It is recommended to visit in spring, summer and autumn, as all hotels close in winter.
- Accommodation inside the scenic area is relatively expensive. A standard room in desert hotels costs 480 yuan per night, and the price may be even higher on some occasions.

Camping with Tents
If you are looking for budget accommodation, you may bring your own tent. However, you need to choose your tent and sleeping bag carefully.
A three-season tent with a semi-mesh inner tent is recommended. Fully mesh tents are not advisable, as sand will blow inside when the wind picks up. As for sleeping bags, select one according to the local seasonal temperature. The temperature drops sharply at night in the Tengger Desert. In April and May, a sleeping bag rated for 0°C will still feel chilly for most people. Given the huge temperature difference between day and night in the desert, a sleeping bag rated for -15°C is the ideal choice.
Rule for choosing sleeping bags: The lower the ambient temperature, the lower the temperature rating your sleeping bag should have.
Travel Tips
- The Tengger Desert Scenic Area is part of Shapotou Scenic Area, so no additional ticket is required. It is separated from the Yellow River scenic zone by the Baotou-Lanzhou Railway.
- The upper reaches of the Yellow River lie right behind the Tengger Desert. The yellow expanse nearby is the desert, and sheepskin rafts, a unique local means of transport in northwest China, float on the river. You can also take a zip line across the Yellow River here. The zip line spans 800 meters with a vertical drop of 60 meters. Those with a lighter weight may get stuck two-thirds of the way and need help from staff on the opposite side to reach the end.
- You can extend your trip to Sand Lake along this route. Sand Lake is a filming location for the classic movie A Chinese Odyssey. Braised fish head with tofu, a local specialty here, tastes wonderful yet comes with a high price tag.
