Address: Shapotou Tourist Area, Zhongwei City, Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region
Located in Zhongwei City, Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region (37°32′N, 105°02′E), Shapotou sits on the southeastern edge of the Tengger Desert and borders the Yellow River. It belongs to a steppe desert zone with an arid and windy climate. The grid-shaped dunes here slope from northwest to southeast in a terraced pattern. The area is world-famous for desert ecological management and tourism.
As a transitional zone between grassland and desert, as well as the flora regions of Central Asia and the Loess Plateau of North China, it is home to 417 plant species and over 130 wild animal species, presenting a complete biosphere transitioning from the north temperate zone of Central Asia to desert areas.
It is China’s first nature reserve featuring desert ecosystems and remarkable sand control achievements. Serving as a reservoir of biological resources in arid deserts, it boasts great scientific research value.
