Best Time to Visit Zhongwei: Summer and Autumn
Located in the west-central part of Ningxia and deep in the inland, Zhongwei borders Gansu to the west and Inner Mongolia to the north. It features a temperate arid climate. Adjacent to the Tengger Desert in the northwest, the area has a temperate continental climate with distinct desert characteristics, enjoying abundant sunshine and limited rainfall.
Spring here is cold, dry and plagued by strong wind and sand. Summer is arid and hot with a sharp temperature difference between day and night. Autumn brings mild coolness and pleasant temperatures, while winter is bitterly cold.
Most tourist attractions in Zhongwei are situated in deserts, mountains and along the Yellow River. It is not ideal for travelling in winter and early spring due to the cold weather, frozen river and frequent sandstorms. By contrast, summer and autumn have mild weather, perfect for a visit.
In summer, you can drift along the Yellow River on traditional sheepskin rafts at Shapotou and taste local summer snacks to beat the heat. Given the dry climate, bring plenty of drinking water and take precautions against heatstroke. As the temperature varies greatly between day and night, remember to take extra clothes for the cool evenings.
