How long does it take to visit Dacang Namo Gerdi Temple? Do I need to buy a ticket?
There are two Langmu Temples, located in Langmu Temple Town at the border of Zoigê County in Sichuan and Luqu County in Gansu. A small stream called the Bailong River runs through the town. The Langmu Temple on the north bank belongs to Gansu, also known as Anduo Dacang Langmu Temple; the one on the south bank belongs to Zoigê County, Sichuan, also known as Gerdi Temple. Both are Gelugpa (Yellow Sect) monasteries of Tibetan Buddhism.
The name “Langmu” comes from a rock formation in a nearby cave that resembles a slender maiden; Langmu means “fairy” in Tibetan. Additionally, there is a tiger den deep in the woods behind the temple, called Dehe Cang in Tibetan. Thus, the temple’s name can be translated as “Fairy in the Tiger’s Den”.
Gerdi Temple once housed many rare treasures, most of which were destroyed during the Cultural Revolution. One precious relic remains: the mummified body of the 5th Gerdi Living Buddha.
Across the river, the Sky Burial Platform of Saichi Temple stands more than 300 meters northwest of Saichi Temple. It is one of the largest sky burial sites in the Amdo region, with a history of over 400 years. Whether you can witness a sky burial depends on luck.
Though only a small town with a few hundred households, Langmu Temple is truly international. Visitors come from all over the world, and shopkeepers hail from every corner of China. Tourists from Germany, France, Denmark, Sweden, Italy and other countries are a common sight; even Israeli visitors can often be encountered, year-round.
