Flaming Mountain is a national AAAA-level tourist attraction situated 28 kilometers east of downtown Turpan, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, right beside National Highway 312吐鲁番火焰.... Formed 50–60 million years ago during the Himalayan orogeny, the scarlet red sandstone massif is carved into dense gullies by long-term wind erosion and water weathering. Barren of plants, the mountain glows red under strong sunlight with rising hot air, just like burning flames, hence its name.
Known as the hottest place in China, its annual rainfall is merely 16.6 mm while annual evaporation hits over 3000 mm. The average surface temperature in summer reaches 70℃, with an extreme recorded ground temperature of 89℃; eggs can be fully cooked in hot sand easily. Made world-famous by the classic Chinese novel Journey to the West (the story of Monkey King borrowing the plantain fan three times to put out mountain fire), the scenic area combines magnificent natural fiery landforms with Journey-to-the-West-themed cultural buildings and Gaochang historical exhibitions.

1. Golden Cudgel Giant Thermometer (World Guinness Record)
金箍棒温度计
Standing at the center of the alchemy furnace square above the underground palace, this landmark is shaped after Sun Wukong’s golden cudgel, certified as the world’s largest three-dimensional thermometer by Guinness World Records.

The underground palace is the core indoor cultural zone of the scenic spot, consisting of 5 themed exhibition halls:

A long passage decorated with 24 sets of stone reliefs, vividly reproducing hardships experienced by Monk Tang and his three disciples during their pilgrimage to India. It systematically shows the classic plots of crossing Flaming Mountain and borrowing the plantain fan, creating an immersive mythical atmosphere.
(2) Flaming Mountain Geographic & Culture Hall

(4) VR "Fly over Flaming Mountain" Experience Hall
Provides immersive VR experience for visitors to overlook the whole fiery mountain landform and restore the legendary scene of flying across the burning mountain in myths.

3. Ground Statue Square & Flaming Mountain Stone Tablet
Stone Tablet: The huge boulder carved with three Chinese characters “Flaming Mountain” is the most classic check-in spot for tourists at the gate of the scenic area, matching the red mountain backdrop perfectly for landscape photos.
Myth Sculpture Group: Large stone sculptures of Sun Wukong, Princess Iron Fan and Bull Demon King are arranged on the square, restoring the fierce confrontation scene of fighting over the plantain fan in the novel.
