Flaming Mountain is a national AAAA-level tourist attraction situated 28 kilometers east of downtown Turpan, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, right beside National Highway 312吐鲁番火焰.... Formed 50–60 million years ago during the Himalayan orogeny, the scarlet red sandstone massif is carved into dense gullies by long-term wind erosion and water weathering. Barren of plants, the mountain glows red under strong sunlight with rising hot air, just like burning flames, hence its name.
Known as the hottest place in China, its annual rainfall is merely 16.6 mm while annual evaporation hits over 3000 mm. The average surface temperature in summer reaches 70℃, with an extreme recorded ground temperature of 89℃; eggs can be fully cooked in hot sand easily. Made world-famous by the classic Chinese novel Journey to the West (the story of Monkey King borrowing the plantain fan three times to put out mountain fire), the scenic area combines magnificent natural fiery landforms with Journey-to-the-West-themed cultural buildings and Gaochang historical exhibitions.

1. Golden Cudgel Giant Thermometer (World Guinness Record)
金箍棒温度计
Standing at the center of the alchemy furnace square above the underground palace, this landmark is shaped after Sun Wukong’s golden cudgel, certified as the world’s largest three-dimensional thermometer by Guinness World Records.
Specifications: Total height 12 m, diameter 0.65 m, the temperature display strip is 5.4 m high; measurable temperature range: -10℃ ~ 100℃, testing both air and ground temperature with an error less than ±0.5℃.
Design Details: Surrounded by relief murals telling stories of Journey to the West, such as Monkey King smashing the alchemy furnace. Its base is decorated with Bagua patterns and an ancient sundial. Tourists always take photos with it to record the real high temperature of Flaming Mountain.
2. Underground Palace (9,000 ㎡ indoor exhibition complex)
The underground palace is the core indoor cultural zone of the scenic spot, consisting of 5 themed exhibition halls:
(1) Journey to the West Cultural Corridor
A long passage decorated with 24 sets of stone reliefs, vividly reproducing hardships experienced by Monk Tang and his three disciples during their pilgrimage to India. It systematically shows the classic plots of crossing Flaming Mountain and borrowing the plantain fan, creating an immersive mythical atmosphere.
(2) Flaming Mountain Geographic & Culture Hall
Equipped with a miniature sand table of the whole mountain range to display local landform features. Wall murals and texts introduce Turpan’s geographical features, climate characteristics, local customs and Silk Road cultural inheritance comprehensively吐鲁番火焰....
(3) Gaochang Historical Celebrities Hall
Exhibits 14 lifelike sculptures of historic figures related to ancient Gaochang Kingdom, including Monk Xuanzang, Gaochang kings, frontier poet Cen Shen and Lin Zexu. It also displays 1:1 restored murals robbed by foreign explorers in modern history, recording the civilization vicissitudes of Turpan Basin抖音百科.
(4) VR "Fly over Flaming Mountain" Experience Hall
Provides immersive VR experience for visitors to overlook the whole fiery mountain landform and restore the legendary scene of flying across the burning mountain in myths.
(5) Supporting Facilities
Including tourist shopping mall, rest area and sand-baked egg experience area where visitors can try cooking food with natural geothermal sand.
3. Ground Statue Square & Flaming Mountain Stone Tablet
Stone Tablet: The huge boulder carved with three Chinese characters “Flaming Mountain” is the most classic check-in spot for tourists at the gate of the scenic area, matching the red mountain backdrop perfectly for landscape photos.
Myth Sculpture Group: Large stone sculptures of Sun Wukong, Princess Iron Fan and Bull Demon King are arranged on the square, restoring the fierce confrontation scene of fighting over the plantain fan in the novel. 4. Tuyugou Valley & Tuyugou Thousand Buddha Caves (Extended Attraction of Flaming Mountain Belt)
Located in the middle section of Flaming Mountain, Tuyugou Canyon stretches 9 kilometers long with steep red rock cliffs forming natural flaming walls. The Thousand Buddha Caves were carved from the Jin Dynasty, retaining ancient Buddhist murals and inscriptions.
