Best Time to Visit Jiuhua Mountain – Ideal Travel Seasons

Jiuhua Mountain is suitable for travel all year round, yet spring and autumn are universally regarded as the optimal visiting seasons.
Jiuhua Mountain features a northern subtropical humid monsoon climate with an annual average temperature of 13.4°C. Rainy and cloudy days prevail here, and sunshine hours are shorter than those at the foot of the mountain. Spring arrives late and autumn comes early on the mountain, accompanied by short summers and long winters. This seasonal contrast becomes more striking at higher altitudes. In winter, the average temperature across most areas of Jiuhua Mountain hovers around 0°C, with a long freezing period.
In spring, Jiuhua Mountain is shrouded in drizzling rain and thick mist. Cloud layers normally range from 90 to 400 meters thick. When cloud depth reaches approximately 1,000 meters, sea of clouds can be admired at Tiantai Peak. This breathtaking scenery also occasionally appears at Hundred-Year Temple, Divine Light Ridge and Minor Tiantai Peak.
Fog lingers on Jiuhua Mountain all year long, especially from January to June and September to October. There are as many as 168 foggy days annually. At times, fog droplets, low-lying clouds and fine drizzle merge together, resulting in extremely poor visibility. When stirred by wind, mist surges and fades intermittently, revealing and concealing mountain ridges in turn, just like the legendary fairyland Penglai.
Calm windless days are rare on Jiuhua Mountain. Strong winds occur most frequently in May, with an average of 19.4 windy days per year. Local valley breezes of small scale also blow frequently throughout the four seasons, particularly in autumn and winter. At Huixiang Pavilion, visitors can listen to roaring pine waves generated by valley winds and witness the spectacular rolling expanse of bamboo seas.
If your trip centers on visiting ancient temples and experiencing profound Buddhist culture, any season works perfectly. Grand Buddhist ceremonies and events are held during major Buddhist festivals on the mountain. However, if you wish to appreciate the gorgeous natural scenery and classic unique wonders of Jiuhua Mountain, spring and autumn stand out as the prime seasons
