Recommended Attractions in Huainan

Jiaogang Lake

Jiaogang Lake Tourist Area lies in the southwestern part of Huainan City, 30 kilometers away from the urban area. The provincial highway linking Hefei and Fuyang runs alongside the zone, and the under-construction Hefei-Huainan-Fuyang Expressway has an exit on its north bank, granting highly convenient transportation.
The planned area of the tourist zone covers 50 square kilometers, among which Jiaogang Lake spans 60,000 mu. The water depth remains roughly 1.8 meters all year round, with an average annual water temperature of 20°C. Endowed with sufficient sunlight, abundant rainfall and clean, unpolluted water, it is a natural lake belonging to the Huai River water system.
The lake abounds in aquatic organisms, featuring ten-thousand-mu reed marshes and one-thousand-mu lotus ponds. It yields plenty of mandarin fish, freshwater shrimp, river crabs, channel catfish, as well as wild ducks, pheasants, wild geese, gordon euryale seed, red lotus, water caltrop and reeds. Reputed as "the Baiyangdian Lake of East China and Jiaogang Lake of Huainan", it is the largest ecological wetland in northern Anhui.
Ticket Price: 40 RMB

Shangyao Forest Park

Shangyao Forest Park is situated in the northeastern part of Huainan, a renowned energy city. Nestled beside the picturesque and fertile Gaotang Lake, it draws on the exquisite natural scenery of Shangyao.
To its north lies the Huai River, adjacent to White Milk Spring, Sacred Spring and Bian He Cave in Huaiyuan. To its east stand the Ming Imperial Mausoleum in Fengyang, Jiushan Karst Cave (known as the Top Cave North of the Yangtze River), Chanku Temple and Tiger Lurking Cave. To its west are Maoxian Cave, Pearl Spring and the Tomb of Liu An, King of Huainan, on Bagong Mountain. National Highway 206 cuts through the park, which encircles the ancient Shangyao Town.
Centered on forest landscapes, the park covers a total area of 10.4 square kilometers. It is a multi-functional provincial forest park integrating ecological tourism, cultural relics, religious sites, vacation and leisure, popular science education, entertainment and fitness.
Ticket Price: 26 RMB

Maoxian Cave Scenic Area

Maoxian Cave Scenic Area is located 3 kilometers south of Fengtai County in Anhui Province, surrounded by water on three sides with the Huai River winding around it. It has long been hailed as a superb scenic spot along the Huai River.
The mountain boasts elegant forests and lush trees, while the silvery Huai River twists and turns at its foot. The mountain rocks tilt oddly, leaning northward toward the south sky. Since ancient times, this place has served as a sacred venue for both Buddhism and Taoism, as well as a top tourist destination. Its landmarks include the Ancient Maoxian Cave, Ancient Shoutang Taoist Temple, the First Gorge of the Huai River, Ancient Xiangshan Temple, the Stone Turtle Listening to Buddhist Scriptures, and the ancient battlefield of the Battle of Fei River, where natural scenery and cultural relics complement each other beautifully.
Composed of the Ancient Maoxian Cave and Qingtian Taoist Temple, the scenic spot sits on the steep southern slope of Shuangfeng Mountain, 3.5 kilometers southwest of Fengtai County Town, Huainan City. The cave entrance is about 1.5 meters high, and the cave stretches over more than 30 zhang deep. It narrows inward and remains unfathomably dark at the innermost end, with chilly winds blowing constantly inside.

Bagong Mountain

Bagong Mountain stands 2 kilometers north of the ancient city of Shouxian, a national historical and cultural city. It is a famous cultural resort and the main haunt of Liu An, King of Huainan in the Han Dynasty. A great number of top intellectuals of that era gathered here, and the profound masterpiece Huainanzi was completed right on this mountain.
A renowned mountain steeped in history and culture, Bagong Mountain consists of more than forty overlapping peaks, covering over 200 square kilometers with gorgeous landscapes. It is also the birthplace of tofu, a green and healthy food. Also known as North Mountain, it is located west of Huainan City, south of the Huai River and north of the Fei River. According to legend, Liu An, King of Huainan of the Western Han Dynasty, refined immortality elixirs here with eight companions, hence the mountain’s name. Ruins of the Temple of Liu An can still be found on the mountain today. With precipitous terrain, it once served as an ancient battlefield.
Transportation: Bus No.26 runs between Bagong Mountain and Tianjia’an District, passing Huainan Railway Station. Other bus routes include No.111, No.121 and No.20. Minibus services available are Route 813 and municipal shuttle buses.

Valley of Forgetfulness

Nestled deep in Bagong Mountain and adjacent to the well-known Sun Family Garden, the Valley of Forgetfulness stretches 2.3 kilometers from northeast to southwest, twisting and winding upward with a vertical drop of over 160 meters along its stream bed.
Legend goes that after Sun Pan built the Green Lang Pavilion, he devoted himself to reading and painting here, finding solace in mountains and rivers and escaping worldly worries. Captivated by the valley’s tranquil charm, he carved two Chinese characters "Forget Worries" on a huge boulder inside the valley; the original carving has vanished over centuries.
A winding brook flows through the valley, its gurgling water sounding like soft ballads. Towering ancient trees grow straight out of the rocks on both sides of the gorge, with clusters of oddly-shaped stone pillars lining the banks. Rare flowers and exotic grasses thrive in the woods, accompanied by singing birds and dancing butterflies, making this an ideal retreat for sightseeing, leisure and summer escape.
Ticket Price: Included in the 40 RMB entrance ticket of Bagong Mountain Scenic Area
