Delicious Food in Anqing – Introduction to Anqing Local Snacks

Xiaojiaqiao Crispy Oil Cakes

Invented by Li Daolong during the Guangxu reign of the Qing Dynasty, the pastry got its name as Li ran his shop by Xiaojiaqiao Bridge, boasting a century-long history. A famous local specialty renowned across the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River, it has won Provincial and Municipal High-Quality Product Awards respectively. In 1978, People’s China published introductions to it in both Chinese and Japanese for promotion.
Crafted elaborately from over ten ingredients including high-gloss wheat flour, sweet osmanthus, sourdough, sesame oil, black sesame seeds and white sesame kernels, the cakes come in sweet and salty varieties. Shaped like crab shells with a golden-yellow hue, they are now produced and sold by the Western Pastry Factory of Anqing Wanchun Catering Company.

Weijia Lane Glutinous Rice Balls

Jiang Dashun Steamed Pork with Rice Crumbs

Steamed pork with rice crumbs is a classic Huizhou dish widely served in restaurants and households. Locals of old Anqing hail Jiang Dashun’s version as the best of its kind. Founded in the late Qing Dynasty, this snack has a history of over 90 years.
The shop is located on Taiping Lane outside the West City Gate. Its founder Jiang Xueying passed away in the 1920s, after which his daughter-in-law Madam Jiang Song took over and refined its flavors, perfecting its color, aroma, taste and appearance. Boasting an exceptional savory fragrance, it ranks among Anqing’s Top Five Local Snacks and is beloved by diners from near and far, famous throughout Anhui Province. Its signature lies in strict raw material selection and fixed secret recipes: only the tender middle streaky pork is used as the main ingredient, with meticulous attention paid to all auxiliary ingredients.

Tongcheng Chinese Cabbage Rice Cakes

A distinctive traditional breakfast staple of Tongcheng City, which gained widespread fame as early as the Ming and Qing dynasties. Back then, townsfolk’s favorite morning treat was a cup of light tea paired with a plate of glossy, translucent cabbage rice cakes. Breakfast shops and teahouses selling these cakes lined the county streets, thriving with booming business.
Its production demands extreme care: 70% long-grain non-glutinous rice and 30% glutinous rice are soaked in warm water for half a day, drained and pounded into fine powder with stone pestles. Tender young Chinese cabbage hearts are lightly boiled, mashed and stripped of tough stalks, then mixed with lard and white sugar as filling. After steaming, the cakes look like carved jade with emerald-green filling inside – soft yet non-sticky, sweet without being cloying.

Jiang Mao Dumplings

A celebrated local snack of Anqing. The filling is made from hind leg meat of mountain black-haired pigs, matched with shrimp and preserved mustard tuber. Dumplings are boiled in pure chicken broth or bone soup, featuring thin wrappers, tender meat and fresh soup with an unforgettable flavor, winning great popularity among locals and tourists alike.
Its founder Jiang Qingfu had a tuft of white hair on his neck, earning him the nickname "Jiang Mao" (Hairy Jiang), hence the name "Jiang Mao Dumplings". It is officially listed as a Characteristic Local Snack by Anhui Provincial Tourism Bureau. The shop is always crowded and has opened branch stores. Most customers order a steamer of small soup buns alongside dumplings for a refreshing bite.

Mailongxiang Mozi Crisp

A time-honored signature pastry from Mailongxiang, a renowned Anqing pastry workshop. Its production involves nine elaborate procedures with carefully proportioned ingredients, primarily premium black sesame seeds, stone-ground sesame oil and refined white sugar.
Dark as ink, the crisp is rich yet not greasy, sweet and refreshing to taste. It nourishes the lungs, tonifies the kidneys and benefits the liver, suitable for all ages. It has been awarded the Ministry of Commerce High-Quality Product Award and Anhui Provincial High-Quality Product Award.
