The Eight Scenic Wonders of Tongling
1. Kite Hill Miniature Landscape
Kite Hill forms a ring-shaped basin, high around the edges and low in the center. When early spring arrives, wild blossoms carpet the slopes amid lush green cypresses, painting an exquisite scene that earns it the name "Kite Hill Miniature Landscape".
2. South Lake Wild Geese Landing
South Lake lies south of the old county seat of Tongling. Every autumn, flocks of wild geese migrate south from the north, pausing here to rest and forage, hence the scenic title "South Lake Wild Geese Landing".
3. Phoenix Mountain at Dawn Moon
Phoenix Mountain stands on the southeastern outskirts of Tongling, home to the Phoenix Perching Stone. Legend tells that in ancient times, as the crescent moon rose, flocks of phoenixes danced gracefully upon this stone. Though merely a beautiful folk tale, the ancients bestowed upon it an elegant name: "Phoenix Mountain at Dawn Moon".
4. Morning Bell of New Temple Village
Along the road leading to Shizishan District sits a village named New Temple Village. Folklore records a Buddhist temple once standing here. At daybreak, monks would strike bronze bells, their clear, resonant chimes echoing across all of Tongling, evoking a sense of peaceful prosperity. The site became known as "Morning Bell of New Temple Village".
5. Sailing Boats Returning at Henggang
At sunset, fleets of white-sailed vessels drift back from afar. Standing on the Henggang Wharf along the Yangtze River stretch of Tongling, visitors behold the magnificent spectacle of homebound sailboats, which gave birth to the scenic spot’s name "Sailing Boats Returning at Henggang".
6. Golden Bull Watching the Lovers’ Trees
On Phoenix Mountain in Tongling’s suburbs grow two intertwined trees called the Lovers’ Trees. Separated by a stream, they twist around each other like embracing sweethearts, said to be the reincarnation of the cowherd and weaver girl from Chinese mythology. Nearby lies Golden Bull Cave, where a divine golden bull — the ox that carried the cowherd to the celestial realm — gazes endlessly at the Lovers’ Trees, wishing all lovers a lifelong happy marriage. This touching vista is named "Golden Bull Watching the Lovers’ Trees".
7. White Cranes Overlooking the Yangtze
A pine forest once lined the approach to Tongling Yangtze River Bridge, a permanent habitat for countless white cranes living in peace. Uncontrolled deforestation forced the cranes to flee, hoping to cross the wide Yangtze to reach pine woods on the opposite bank. Unable to fly across the river, they lingered at the riverside, gazing longingly at the water each day. This sight was named "White Cranes Overlooking the Yangtze" as a reminder to protect forests and the ecological environment from reckless logging.
8. Sunset Glow over West River
The urban area of Tongling sits where the Yangtze curves northward, a stretch locals call the West River. At dusk, sunset radiance shimmers across the water, embodying the poetic line: A stretch of sunset spreads upon the waves; half the river glimmers emerald, half blazes crimson. The landscape bears the name "Sunset Glow over West River".
