What Delicious Food Is There in Changzhou?

Crab-Filled Mini Soup Dumplings

They were first created at Wanhua Teahouse south of the pontoon bridge on Xiaoheyan during the Daoguang reign of the Qing Dynasty.
Features: Golden and glossy crab roe, rich yet not greasy with an inviting crab aroma and delicious broth. The wrappers are thin and chewy, while the filling is tender and smooth. Paired with black vinegar and shredded ginger, they taste exquisite.

Large Sesame Cakes

Changzhou Large Sesame Cakes are oval-shaped big sesame flatbreads with a unique texture and flavor, a beloved traditional staple for local residents. They come in two flavors: salty and sweet.
Freshly baked cakes emit a strong alluring fragrance with a smooth golden hue without charring. They strike a perfect balance of saltiness and sweetness without being cloying, fragrant, crisp and tender rather than brittle, excelling in color, aroma and taste. Locals used to mostly eat them for breakfast in old times.

Crab Shell Pastries

A local Changzhou snack, also known as small sesame cakes, they are often paired with large sesame cakes as gift sets. Four fillings are available: shepherd’s purse, scallion oil, white sugar and glossy red bean paste.
Features: Shaped like crab shells with a golden color, rich oil content yet non-greasy. Crisp, flaky and crumbly; sweet fillings are mellow, while savory fillings taste fresh.

Yilong Vegetarian Ham

Founded in 1932, Yilong Restaurant is famous across the city for its pure vegetarian dim sum. Vegetarian ham is its signature traditional specialty.
It carries a fresh, rich aroma with a chewy yet tender texture and refreshing flavor. Sliced thin and drizzled with sesame oil, it looks just like pork ham, making it an ideal side dish for meals and wine.

Horseshoe Crisp Pastries

After the Taiping Rebellion troops captured Changzhou in the 10th year of the Xianfeng reign of the Qing Dynasty, oil pastries shaped like horseshoes became popular among locals to praise the rebels’ achievements.
Made from refined white flour, soft white sugar and soybean oil, they are baked in traditional brick ovens. Golden in color, sweet, fragrant and flaky, this pastry has been included in Recipes of Famous Chinese Pastries.
