Recommended Specialties of Zunyi
Kweichow Moutai
Produced in Maotai Town, Renhuai City, Guizhou Province, Kweichow Moutai ranks among the world's top three great distilled liquors, alongside Scotch Whisky and French Cognac. It is the originator of strong daqu sauce-aroma Baijiu, with a history of over 800 years.
Brewed from sorghum, wheat and high-quality local spring water via unique traditional techniques, it undergoes 8 rounds of daqu addition, 7 distillations and 9 fermentations. The whole brewing process takes 8 months, followed by long-term cellaring. Generally, the liquor is aged for 5 years before leaving the factory. It won a gold medal and certificate at the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition.
Small-leaf Kuding Tea
Grown in Yuqing County, small-leaf Kuding tea is made from tender shoots and leaves of Ligustrum robustum of the Oleaceae family. It is a caffeine-free herbal tea. The tea grows along the Wujiang River basin in Guizhou. Benefiting from favorable climate and a pollution-free growing environment, Yuqing’s small-leaf Kuding tea features superior quality, a mellow and refreshing taste, and heat-clearing effects.
Zunyi Silk
Zunyi silk is woven from tussah silk. Its product range includes quilt covers, satin-backed crepe, rayon fabric and kimono silk, among which silk quilt covers are the traditional staple. Thirteen counties in Zunyi are major tussah silkworm breeding areas and the birthplace of Guizhou’s silk industry. Back in the Daoguang reign of the Qing Dynasty, Zunyi had developed into a prosperous silk-weaving hub and the provincial silk trade center. Its products were sold far to the Western Regions and Southeast Asia.
Chishui Bamboo Products
Chishui boasts abundant bamboo resources stretching for thousands of miles across the region. There are dozens of edible bamboo varieties such as bamboo fungus, winter bamboo shoots, soft bamboo shoots, water bamboo shoots and mountain bamboo shoots. Rare bamboo-dwelling delicacies include bamboo partridge, bamboo mole and bird’s nest from bamboo groves. Countless fresh and dried processed bamboo products bring the total categories to hundreds. A trip to Chishui would not be complete without taking home one or two of these specialties.
Pointed Pepper
Zunyi is one of China’s major chili-producing areas. Suiyang pointed pepper is listed among China’s seven renowned chili varieties. It gets its name because its fruits grow straight upward toward the sky. After harvesting and sun-drying, the peppers present a bright, vivid red hue. They were exported to Southeast Asia as early as the 1950s, and are now sold to Japan, the United States and other countries.
