What Is Shaba Bay Like? A Brief Introduction to Shaba Bay
Shaba Bay covers a total area of 9.2 square kilometers, governing four fishermen’s committees and one residents’ committee. It has a total population of 16,550, including 8,500 people engaged in fishery and around 3,000 offshore fishing laborers. In 2003, the total fishery output reached 68,000 tons with an output value of 230 million yuan, registering a per capita income of 13,897 yuan.
Adjacent to Moon Bay, Shaba Bay boasts a 1.5-kilometer coastline and ranks among the top tourist attractions in Yangxi County. It is connected to National Highway 325 via a 15-kilometer county-level asphalt road, 42 kilometers away from the urban area of Yangxi County. By sea and land combined, it is 42 kilometers from Zhapo Port and 37 kilometers west of Bohe Port in Dianbai District.
Over the years, Shaba Town has attached great importance to the development of fishery production and the planning and construction of fishing ports. A new integrated fishery industrial system has taken shape, integrating fishing, aquaculture and processing; fisheries, industry and trade; production, supply and sales; as well as fishery-related science, education and research, which has boosted the all-round development of the town’s fishery economy.
In the Qing Dynasty, Shaba Town fell under the Second Baili Subsection of Baishi Du, Hailing Township. In the early years of the Republic of China, it belonged to the Seventh District. In 1937 (the 26th year of the Republic of China), it was placed under the Third District, and returned to the Seventh District in 1949 (the 38th year of the Republic of China).
In the early days of the People’s Republic of China, it remained within the Seventh District under the name Bei’e Township. In May 1953, it was renamed Shaba Town under the Eighteenth District. It was reclassified as Shaba District in December 1956 and restored to Shaba Town in February 1957.
In November 1958, it was incorporated into the Great Leap Forward People’s Commune, and transferred to Rudong People’s Commune in December the same year. Shaba People’s Commune was separated and established in October 1959.
The commune was abolished and replaced by Shaba District in November 1983, and the district was revoked to reinstate Shaba Town in February 1987.
