Precautions for Visiting Shaba Bay
Watch out for jellyfish and sea urchins.
Do warm-up exercises before entering the water. Do not dive where there are many reefs.
Bring all necessary swimming gear; bring swimming goggles if possible.
Keep track of the tide schedule when swimming at the seaside. The tide recedes right after high tide. Avoid swimming during ebb tide to prevent accidents caused by excessive physical exhaustion when swimming back against the tide. Do not swim when the waves are rough or visibility is poor. Never swim too far out alone, and stay away from unknown waters.
Never swim after drinking alcohol. This is common knowledge, yet many people ignore it. Experienced swimmers may overestimate their skills and believe nothing bad will happen to them. Alcohol further overconfuses people by stimulating the brain, but the sea is merciless. You will regret it deeply if you suffer any physical emergency out at sea.
Avoid swimming under intense scorching sunlight. Many people only know sunbathing while swimming will darken the skin, yet a more serious risk is heatstroke and coma caused by prolonged exposure to blazing sun. Do not assume staying in seawater can prevent this — heatstroke can still occur.
Stay calm and composed if any trouble arises in the water. If you get a cramp, remain calm, switch to back floating, raise your hand to signal for help and wait for rescuers.
