Six kilometers southwest of Ciping, Five-Finger Peak gets its name from its five ridgelines resembling the five fingers of a human hand, with an altitude of 1,438 meters. Stretching dozens of kilometers from southeast to northwest, the imposing precipitous massif remains an untrodden "mysterious land". Visitors can only admire its grand silhouette from the viewing platform across the river. It boasts well-preserved primeval forest and has been designated a nature reserve.
Two giant peaks stand facing each other, enclosing a deep valley through which the Longqing River, also known as the Jinggangshan River, winds. Halfway up the mountain lies Heavenly Army Cave, said to have been a station for the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom troops in ancient times. Facing Five-Finger Peak is Longqing Cave, also dubbed Guerrilla Cave. Legend holds immortals once dwelt here, and the Red Army endured bitter cold and heavy snow to wage over 40 days of guerrilla warfare in the cave.
The scenic zone functions as a natural wildlife sanctuary, home to rare fauna including stump-tailed macaques, muntjacs and yellow-bellied tragopans. The Longqing River at the foot of the peak abounds in stone frogs and stream fish, while stone lichens grow profusely on valley cliffs.
Five-Finger Peak Waterfall, the tallest waterfall in Jinggangshan, features a vertical drop of roughly 200 meters. Like a silk scroll hanging mid-air, its flowing white curtain is visible kilometers away. At the foot of the peak lies a cluster of mountain lakes, shimmering like bright moons amid boundless sea of clouds, adding enchanting charm to the core scenic area.
With spring-like weather all year round and picturesque alpine waters, it serves as an ideal summer retreat and tourist destination. Notably, the backdrop pattern on the 100-yuan RMB banknote is exactly Five-Finger Peak, the main peak of Jinggangshan. Tourists often take out a 100-yuan note to compare the printed image with the real landscape, creating a unique delightful experience.
The Longqing River under Five-Finger Peak yields the famed "Three Stone Delicacies of Jinggangshan": stone frogs, stream fish and stone lichens.
In spring, overlapping peaks are clad in emerald green amid singing birds and blooming flowers;
In late summer, croaking frogs and chirping cicadas fill the air with melodious sounds;
In autumn, red maple leaves glow in sunlight, dyeing mountain forests in fiery hues;
In winter, everything is wrapped in silver snow, with crystal ice glistening like jade.
