Kaiping diaolou towers first appeared in the late Ming Dynasty and reached their heyday in the early 20th century. With 1,833 towers preserved to this day, these exquisitely built structures blend Chinese and Western styles, hailed as a breathtaking architectural art corridor and inscribed as a World Cultural Heritage Site in 2007.

Nestled amid stunning natural scenery, Zili Village is dotted with paddy fields and lotus ponds that form a delightful contrast with countless diaolou towers and villas. The village houses 15 distinct, elaborate towers with profound cultural connotations, including Mingshi Tower and Yunhuan Tower. Well-preserved daily necessities inside the towers serve as vivid testimony to the life and culture of overseas Chinese in that era.

A Major Historical and Cultural Site Protected at the National Level, Li Garden is a garden villa built over ten years by the late overseas Chinese Xie Weili, who resided in the United States. It seamlessly combines traditional Chinese gardening, Jiangnan water town aesthetics and Western architectural styles.

The garden is divided into three sections: the Grand Garden, the Small Garden and the Villa Zone, separated by artificial waterways and boundary walls yet connected by pavilions over water and covered overhead corridors. Within the garden lie smaller gardens, and every view unfolds another scene. Exquisitely laid out with terraces, pavilions and waterside chambers, it earns the reputation of “No.1 Overseas Chinese Garden”.

Take minibuses bound for Magang or Dasha in Kaiping, alight at the Li Garden junction for a 5-yuan fare, then walk 200 metres to reach the garden.

Shangchuan Island features rugged mountains, exotic rock formations and dense forests, with over 30 kilometres of premium coastline. Its attractions include Feisha Beach Resort, a provincial macaque nature reserve, the St. Francis Xavier Memorial Cemetery, Leshan Giant Buddha, bamboo cypress groves and Shadi Fishing Port.

Stretching 4,800 metres long, Feisha Beach boasts a wide shoreline with silvery sand, snow-white surf and crystal-clear seawater. Watching the sunrise over the South China Sea along this ten-li stretch of beach presents an extraordinarily magnificent sight.

Backed by mountains and facing the sea, Langqin Bay presents stunning coastal vistas where sandy shores meet turquoise waters, foamy waves crash against stone forests, and blue skies frame green hills. It is known as the “Stone Forest on the Sea”. Precious Taishan jade is mined here, and numerous jade shops fill the surrounding fishing villages, making it an ideal spot for jade hunting.

Nestled beneath the scenic Gudou Mountain with hills behind and the sea ahead, Gudou Hot Springs integrates mountains, sea, lakes and thermal springs. Famous for its “one resort, two types of hot springs”, it features seawater saline hot springs and radon fresh hot springs with different therapeutic effects. It is an all-in-one resort offering natural scenery, leisure entertainment and conference facilities.

A nationally renowned natural bird-watching site, Bird’s Paradise centres on a mud mound and a single banyan tree. Over more than 380 years of growth and reproduction, this “Tree of Life” shelters tens of thousands of birds. The harmonious coexistence of tree and birds creates a natural wonder where one tree forms a paradise. In 1933, literary master Ba Jin visited by boat and marvelled at the sight, penning his prose The Bird’s Paradise, which brought the attraction nationwide fame.

Dedicated to showcasing the history and culture of China’s hometown of overseas Chinese, the museum spans over 9,000 square metres and houses 35,000 cultural relics of overseas Chinese, the largest collection nationwide. It consists of six exhibition halls: Dreams in Jinshan, Pioneering Overseas, Loyal Hearts, Rise of the Overseas Chinese Hometown, New Chapter of the Hometown, and Glory of the Chinese Diaspora. Utilising modern audio, lighting and digital technology, the museum recreates historical scenes to vividly depict the century-long vicissitudes of Wuyi’s overseas Chinese.
