Wuzhong is not highly developed in terms of commerce, yet it boasts several decent shopping malls, such as New Century Shopping Mall, Old Department Store, Wuzhong Shopping Center, Old Farmers' Market, and Xinbai Supermarket. Most of the local tourist specialties—Yellow River pigeon fish, Wuzhong melon seeds, Yellow River carp, Xixia tribute rice, Tan sheepskin, licorice, and wolfberry—can be purchased here.
Local Specialties of Wuzhong, Ningxia
Widow Zhang’s Yellow Rice Wine
With a century-long history, this rice wine is produced in Jinji Town, Litong District, Wuzhong.
Rice
Wuzhong is one of Ningxia’s major rice-growing regions, with a long history of cultivation. Favorable natural conditions—including ample sunlight and suitable temperatures—combined with the promotion of high-quality varieties, yield plump, glossy grains rich in protein. The cooked rice is white as jade, fragrant, and slightly oily, rivaling the renowned Tianjin Xiaozhan rice. Large quantities are exported annually.
Melons & Fruits
As early as the Eastern Jin Dynasty, the Xia Kingdom established by the Xiongnu people built orchards here. During the Tang Dynasty, poet Wei Zhan wrote in Sending Lu Pan to Lingwu:
"Beneath Helan Mountains, orchards thrive;
South of the Great Wall, a land of plenty, long renowned."
This attests to its ancient fruit-growing heritage. Abundant sunshine and large day-night temperature differences produce thin-skinned, crisp, sweet melons and fruits, primarily watermelons, muskmelons, and oriental melons.
Wolfberry (Goji Berry)
A precious traditional Chinese medicinal herb, this woody plant is known as the "Red Treasure" for its bright red, nutrient-dense berries. It is one of Wuzhong’s traditional export commodities.
Hair-like Seaweed (Facai)
A naturally occurring algae found in arid and semi-arid regions of northern China
