Yanchi
Yanchi County lies in the eastern part of Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region and is under the jurisdiction of southern Yinchuan. It is a major production base for the well-known Ningxia Tan sheep and historically served as the border between China’s farming and nomadic peoples. The county seat is located in Chengguan Town. Broad steppes and desert grasslands extend from its southeast to northwest. Yanchi is famous for its salt, fur and high-quality licorice. The world-renowned Ningxia Tan sheep constitute a major pillar of the local economy. Yanchi was named Hometown of Chinese Licorice in 1995. It is also a key area for Tan sheep breeding and animal husbandry in Ningxia. It was awarded the title Hometown of Chinese Tan Sheep in 2003 and officially recognized again under the same name in 2005.

The One Hundred and Eight Pagodas (Qingtongxia)
The One Hundred and Eight Pagodas are among the largest existing ancient pagoda groups in China. They stand beneath the cliff on the west bank of Qingtongxia Reservoir, 60 kilometers south of Yinchuan. Facing east against the mountain and beside the river, this group of solid Lama-style pagodas is believed to date back to the Western Xia Dynasty. Silk scrolls inscribed with Western Xia characters and Buddhist artifacts were unearthed at the pagoda foundations.
Following the mountain slope, the pagodas are arranged in twelve rows from top to bottom in odd numbers: 1, 3, 3, 5, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15, 17 and 19. In total there are 108 pagodas, forming a huge triangular layout, which gives the site its name.
The exact construction time remains unknown. Historical records including Unified Records of the Great Ming and New Records of the Hongzhi Reign of Ningxia once dated it back to the Yuan Dynasty. Nevertheless, cultural relics discovered during renovations — such as Western Xia silk paintings, painted sculptures, decorative patterns and inscriptions — prove that the pagoda group was most likely built in the Western Xia Dynasty. It underwent repeated repairs in the Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties.
In 1988, the State Council listed it as a Major Historical and Cultural Site Protected at the National Level. In 2003, it was rated an AA-level tourist attraction by the local tourism authority.
Tongxin County
Tongxin County is located in the south-central part of Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region and administered by Wuzhong City. It borders Yanchi County and Huan County of Qingyang City in Gansu Province to the east, Yuanzhou District of Guyuan City to the south, Shapotou District, Zhongning County and Haiyuan County of Zhongwei City to the west, and Hongsibu District of Wuzhong City to the north. Situated on the Loess Plateau in the southern Ordos Platform, the terrain is higher in the south and lower in the north.
As an important part of the Shaanxi-Gansu-Ningxia revolutionary base area, Tongxin boasts profound red culture and preserved the footprints of many founding fathers of the People's Republic. This invaluable spiritual heritage is the eternal glory and pride of local people. However, severely fragile ecological environment has hindered rural economic development and people’s living standards. Local agriculture still largely depends on natural rainfall. Tongxin is also listed as a national-level old revolutionary base area, ethnic minority area, border area and poverty-stricken county.
