Jianchang Ancient City
Jianchang Ancient City is home to over 2,400 cultural relics, including ancient ruins, tomb clusters, stone carvings, rock paintings and historic buildings scattered across the area. Local ancient sites fall into four categories: settlement ruins, city ruins, kiln sites and mining and metallurgy sites, dating back to the Neolithic Age, Yin and Shang Dynasties, Spring and Autumn Period, Warring States Period, Qin and Han Dynasties, Two Jin Dynasties, Tang and Song Dynasties, as well as Ming and Qing Dynasties. Among them are 17 Neolithic sites, 2 Yin-Shang sites, 3 Han Dynasty sites, 11 ancient city ruins, 2 kiln sites and 2 mining and metallurgy sites.
With a history of 500 years, the ancient city once attracted numerous scholars and literati. Many renowned figures left their calligraphy and works here, including Yang Sheng'an, a litterateur of the Ming Dynasty; He Shaoji, a calligrapher of the Qing Dynasty; Cha Jiantang, a Qing poet; and Huang Yanpei, a modern educator.
On Jiangpo Hill, 2 kilometers east of the ancient city, stands the well-known Yuelu Castle. Archaeological identification proves it is a military fortress built between the late Yuan Dynasty and early Ming Dynasty. Remnants of military works and stone catapults from ancient battles can still be seen on the castle walls today.
