Maomaoxi Salt Tax Bureau is the historic site where Marshal He Long launched his revolutionary uprising with two kitchen knives, and it ranks as a well-known red tourism attraction.

On the 28th day of the 12th lunar month in 1916, the young He Long answered the call of Cai E to launch the National Protection War against Yuan Shikai. Together with twelve impoverished fellow villagers, he targeted the Maomaoxi Salt Tax Bureau, an institution that exploited local people by extorting heavy taxes. After seizing control of the bureau, he returned to Hongjiaguan and raised the banner of armed uprising. Since He Long’s only weapons were two kitchen knives, the story "Launching a Revolution with Two Kitchen Knives" has become an iconic symbol of Marshal He Long’s early revolutionary career.

In the early 1950s, one wing containing two rooms of the original compound was demolished, while three wings with four rooms and their original furnishings remain preserved to this day.
