Recommended 4-Day Tour Itinerary for Shennongjia
Day 1: Wild Man Valley & Wild Man Cave → Hongping Gallery Scenic Area → Swallow Pass
Depart from Shiyan City. The journey is 100 kilometers and takes about 5 hours. You will usually arrive in Fangxian County around lunchtime, so enjoy your lunch here before starting the afternoon tour.
First, visit Wild Man Valley and Wild Man Cave, which stand side by side. The valley is covered with ancient primeval forests. Afterwards, take a 2-hour drive to Hongping Gallery Scenic Area. Have dinner at a local farmhouse in Hongping Town and stay overnight here.
Day 2: Banbi Rock → Scenic Pass → Golden Monkey Ridge → Muyu Town
Drive from Hongping Town to Shennongding Nature Reserve and have lunch upon arrival before beginning the afternoon sightseeing.
Banbi Rock is known as the "haunt of the Wild Man", where hair, droppings, footprints and simple bamboo huts linked to the Wild Man have been discovered on multiple occasions. The scenic area encompasses Scenic Pass, Golden Monkey Ridge, Banbi Rock, Dajiu Lake and other spots.
After the tour, drive to Muyu Town for an overnight stay. In the evening, you may join a bonfire and barbecue party featuring authentic Tujia customs. After breakfast the next morning, head for Shennong Altar and Xiangxiyuan.
Day 3: Shennong Altar → Xiangxiyuan → Longmen River National Forest Park
Pay homage to Shennong, the ancient ancestor of the Chinese nation. Climb the 343 steps to view the statue of Shennong with an ox head and human body (around 40 minutes). Then follow the footpath to Xiaodangyang to admire the thousand-year-old ancient fir tree (about 1 hour). Have lunch nearby after the visit.
After lunch, stroll along the mountain paths in the Ancient Botanical Garden to see a wide variety of plants. You can dine at restaurants near the Fauna and Flora Specimen Hall. In the afternoon, continue along the mountain roads to Longmen River National Forest Park.
Enjoy dinner in the Longmen River area, where the traditional Tujia feast will surely delight your taste buds. Return to Muyu Town for accommodation after the tour.
Day 4: Six-Pass Gorge → Wushan Lake → Laojun Mountain → Moon Cave
Set off from Muyu Town in the morning for Songbai Town. Six-Pass Gorge, Wushan Lake, Laojun Mountain and Moon Cave are all within easy reach of one another. Arrange your schedule properly to finish the entire Shennongjia tour before the afternoon.
