Local Specialties of Anyang & Recommended Stores

Famous for the Yin Ruins, a World Cultural Heritage site, Anyang was once one of the cradles of early Chinese civilization.

Daokou Braised Chicken

As a classic traditional dish of the Han nationality, Daokou Braised Chicken is exclusively produced by the time-honored family brand Yixing Zhang in Daokou Town, Hua County, Henan Province. Its craftsmanship has been passed down through generations and formed a unique style. Enjoying equal fame with Peking Roast Duck and Jinhua Ham, it is reputed as the Second Best Chicken Under Heaven.

Neihuang Jujube

As early as the Tang Dynasty, Neihuang jujube was designated as a royal tribute. There are numerous varieties, with Flat Nucleus Sour-Sweet Jujube being the leading breed. The fruit is short cylindrical with a flat pit. Its outer skin is purplish red and the flesh pale yellow, elastic, sweet and sour. Rich in nutrients, it also delivers excellent healthcare effects.

Anyang Jade Carving

Anyang boasts a long history of jade craftsmanship. As far back as over 3,000 years ago during the Yin-Shang Period, the ancient capital Yin (present-day Anyang) was a major jade-making hub. Anyang jade carvings mainly feature human figures, flowers, birds and animals. They are exquisitely carved with vivid shapes and brilliant luster. Masterpieces such as Fairy Scattering Flowers, Eight Steeds and Gods of the Five Great Mountains sell well at home and abroad.

Linzhou Hawthorn

Also known as Northern Hawthorn, it is grown in Linzhou, located at the eastern foot of the Taihang Mountains in northern Henan. Two improved varieties have been developed: Northern Henan Red Hawthorn and Lin Red Hawthorn.

Balaying Melon

A product protected under the geographical indication of agricultural products, it is cultivated in the administrative area of Balaying Township, Hua County, Anyang. The melons have regular shapes and flawless skin with even coloring. They are ready for harvest when the fine fuzz around the stem fades away and the surface feels smooth to the touch.

Anyang Trichosanthes Fruit

Another geographical indication agricultural product, it is produced across four counties, one county-level city and four districts under Anyang’s jurisdiction. The fruit is nearly spherical or broadly elliptical, with orange-yellow skin that can be wrinkled or smooth. A circular remnant of the style sits on the top, and a short fruit stalk remains at the slightly pointed base.

Five-spice Bean Paste Soup

A popular soup among local residents. The finished soup is milky yellow, garnished with bright red and green ingredients. The seasonings create a rich flavor with a mild spicy kick.

Jujube & Peanut Basket

A distinctive folk craft featuring local Neihuang characteristics. Peanuts are strung together with thread to form the main basket, which is filled with jujubes and decorated with chili peppers on the outside. With a simple and natural design, it is a delight to look at and is also named Three Treasures Basket of Jujube Aroma.

Neihuang Starch Sausage

A unique local snack of Neihuang County. It contains abundant fat, protein, wheat starch, carbohydrates, as well as trace elements including iron, calcium, potassium and sodium. It helps replenish blood, invigorate the spleen and strengthen bones. Delicious and affordable, it is deeply loved by the public.

Wei Cyperus Rotundus

Grown in Hua County, Anyang. The dried rhizome is mostly spindle-shaped, featuring large size, dark brown color, solid texture, thick flesh and strong fragrance with potent medicinal properties. Its core is situated right in the center, different from common cyperus rotundus with offset cores.

Niutun Sesame Flatbread

A specialty snack from Niutun Town, Hua County. Larger than ordinary sesame cakes and crispier than meat-filled pastries, it is round like a pancake with a coppery brown color, bulging in the middle and with distinct layers. It is widely favored for its generous meat filling, crispy exterior and tender interior, rich flavor and easy serving.

Anyang Blood Cake

One of the Three Treasures of Anyang. Nutritious, crispy and tasty, it is affordable with a unique flavor, popular among locals and tourists alike.

Pizha (Steamed Vermicelli Cake)

One of the Three Treasures of Anyang. An irresistible delicacy. It is mainly made of vermicelli, together with green onions, garlic, lard, refined salt, sesame oil and dried shrimps. It can be pan-fried, stir-fried or steamed in a bowl in various ways.

Fermented Mung Bean Porridge

One of the Three Treasures of Anyang. It has a rich, mellow taste with sweet and sour notes and helps clear internal heat. It is simmered with fermented mung bean slurry, high-quality millet, soybeans, peanuts, salt and an appropriate amount of lard. Before serving, top with scallion sauce and chopped coriander.

Laomiao Beef

Produced in Laoyemiao Township, Hua County, Anyang, it is praised as a gem of northern Henan and an unparalleled delicacy of China. The beef is slow-cooked over charcoal fire with fifteen kinds of condiments and aged soup stock.

Anyang Liao Hua Pastry

A time-honored traditional pastry of Anyang (formerly known as Zhangde Prefecture). According to Annals of Anyang County compiled in the Jiaqing reign of the Qing Dynasty, pastries made by Jin Tai and Gang Tai workshops were widely famous. The craft has a history of more than 200 years.

Anyang Three Smoked Delicacies

The set includes smoked chicken, smoked eggs and smoked pork head meat. The finished products are persimmon red, glossy and oily, rich yet not greasy with an authentic strong aroma and lingering aftertaste. They taste great either cold or hot, and go perfectly with wine and meals.

Anyang Mixed Stew

A famous local dish noted for diverse ingredients, well-matched seasonings, rich broth and balanced nutrition. It falls into different categories: high-grade seafood mixed stew, premium mixed stew, ordinary home-style mixed stew and budget-friendly flat noodle stew. Variations such as tofu casserole and seafood casserole are also derived from it.

Caoma Sesame Candy

A traditional snack from Caoma Village, Cuijiaqiao Township, Anyang County. Famous nationwide, its exclusive production technique has been inherited for over 500 years. The candy has a fine texture, being crisp, thin, light and hollow. It leaves no residue, and will not stick to teeth or hands.

Yigou Hollow Noodles

A specialty of Yigou Town, Tangyin County, Anyang. With a 200-year history, the handmade hollow noodles feature exquisite craftsmanship. As thin as silver threads and hollow inside, they are hailed as a superb pasta delicacy.
